Cavs vs Kelvedon, Part 1

The Sunday XI travelled to Kelvedon today for the first of two games in two weeks to be played between the sides at Rye Mill Lane.

After losing the toss the Cavaliers were asked to bat first after some morning rain had dampened the ground, and lost F Murtaza (3) early on to make the score 11/1. With runs hard to come by, it was slow going for the Cavaliers, reaching 29/1 after 12 overs before N Jalib (6) was next to be dsimissed. A third wicket partnership of 26 in 5 overs saw the Cavs rebuild, but the wicket of M Nadeem (21) was quickly followed by those of M Vinter (10) and B Aslam (4) as the score slipped from 55/2 to 64/5. A further 19 runs were added for the sixth wicket, but another mini-collapse saw the Cavaliers go from 83/5 to 88/8 as S Riaz (6), U Akhter (11) and A Khaliq (1) were all out. With D Young and N Davidson combining for the ninth wicket, they added 31 together (the highest partnership of the innings) in 7 overs before Davidson (23) was stumped in the 38th over. The next over saw U Ghani (5) bowled as the Cavaliers innings closed on 125 all out from 38.4 overs with Young (9*) not out.

The Kelvedon reply saw N Davidson (5-0-26-1) strike early as S Riaz (4-0-18-0) went wicketless., but the early breakthrough only succeeded in bringing E King to the crease, who hit four boundaries off A Khaliq (2-0-20-0) early on. With U Ghani (4-0-31-0) unlucky to not claim a wicket in his spell, Jalib turned to M Nadeem (4-0-20-1) who claimed a wicket in his second over via a sharp cath at gully by M Vinter to make the score 91/2. Kelvedon continued to attack, primarily through King (81*), as a short spell from B Aslam (1.1-0-10-0) was also seen off - Kelvedon reaching 129/2 from 20.1 overs to win by 8 wickets.

Cavs Win in Mill Road Farewell

The Saturday XI welcomed Brockley II to Mill Road today in our last ever fixture at the Rugby Club before our proposed move to Mile End Recreation Ground.

After winning the toss the Cavaliers fielded first, with S Riaz (first spell of 8-3-18-1) and N Davidson (first spell of 5-0-24-0) bowling well as Brockley reached 41/1 after 11 overs. Brockley then rebuilt their innings through an impressive secon wicket partnership of 140 as P Kannan (8-0-47-0) and K Chowdhury (7-0-42-0) went wicketless, while N Hussain had a disappoining day, seeing several dropped catches and a missed stumping, before he then had his spell cut short at 9-1-33-0; injuring himself attempting a catch off his own bowling, he badly injured himself and had to be taken to A&E for 11 stiches to his hand! Hussain's injury saw Riaz return to the attack, and he managed to deflect the ball onto the stumps to run out the Brockley #3, T Steggles (59), as they reached 181/2 from 39 overs. With Brockley going onto the attack in the last few overs, Riaz's (14-3-70-1) figures took a hit (38 coming off his last 3 overs), but the returning Davidson (7-0-33-1) struck late on as the inings closed on 231/3 after 45 overs, with the Brockley captain, A McCaffrey carrying his bat for 129*.

The Cavaliers reply started poorly with D Dellar (0) dismissed off the fourth ball of the chase, but a second wicket partnership between M Vinter and K Chowdhury saw the Cavs recover to 67/1 before Chowdhury (28) was caught at point off a leading edge. The usual Cavs collapse didn't materialise though, as Vinter combined with P Kannan (39) to add a further 66 runs for the third wicket; Kannan's dismissal making the score 133/3 after 26 overs. With Vinter reaching his fifty from 92 balls, the Cavaliers continued to make good progress despite T Hijazi (6) being caught and bowled by McCaffrey as the score reached 160/4 after 33.2 overs. The Cavaliers then continued their fine batting performance, as Vinter (96*) and V Gedi (31*) combined in an unbeaten fifth wicket partnership of 73* (the highest fifth wicket partnership of 2019) in just 9.4 overs; the Cavaliers reaching 233/4 from 43.1 overs, winning by 6 wickets with 11 balls to spare.

Massive Loss at Springfield

The Sunday XI travelled to Springfield today and fielded first after losing the toss.

With three players arriving late due to leaving late and traffic, Springfield were able to find gaps easily against opening bowlers N Davidson and B Prabhu (5-0-33-0) as they reached 46/0 after 5 overs before all eleven players were present. The Springfield openers were still able to find gaps or hit over the top against H Ahamed (4-0-34-0) and M Nadeem as C Prudence passed 50. With enough time elapsed for the late players to bowl, Nadeem turned to A Khaliq (4-1-25-0) and S Riaz (6-0-38-0), who struggled with an old ball which hadn't been shined throughout the innings. With Prudence progressing past 100 and 150, the Springfield total passed 200 easily. A lack of breakthroughs from B Aslam (3-0-23-0), P Kannan (2-0-28-0) and S Khan (2-0-26-0) saw Prudence pass 200 and his opening partner J Gooday pass 50. With Prudence hitting the mangled match ball into bushes, the ball was lost, and the replacement brought an immediate wicket as Prudence (218) was caught by Davidson on the boundary off the bowling of the returning Nadeem (7-1-48-1); the openers adding a mind-boggling 286 runs together! With Davidson (7-0-44-1) bowling the Springfield number three in the next over, it was left to Gooday (57*) and the new batsman to see Springfield up to an imposing final total of 308/2 off their 40 overs.

The Cavaliers reply saw the openers add 23 runs in 6.4 overs before U Akhter (14) was trapped LBW. The second wicket added a further 18 runs in six overs, but the wicket of P Kannan (18) - Caught on the boundary at cow corner off M Southwell - saw the score slip to 41/2, and the Cavaliers batting line up began to collapse; M Nadeem (4), S Khan (1), and S Riaz (0) out as the Cavs reached 46/5 after 14.4 overs. With H Ahamed (3) and B Aslam (3) both out soon afterwards, the score slipped to 56/7 as Southwell brought up his 5-fer before the drinks break. The Cavaliers struggled along with B Prabhu and N Davidson at the crease, but Davidson (5) was stumped before A Khaliq (4) was caught - Springfield reducing the Cavs to 79/9. Prabhu and D Young then targeted the possibility of batting bonus points, but Southwell (8.3-1-16-6) had Prabhu (23) caught on the midwicket boundary (the fifth Cavalier caught on the boundary, searching for a big hit); the Cavaliers all out for just 92 from 28.3 overs, with Young (1*) not out in a 216 run loss.

Cavs Have Sax Appeal

The Saturday XI travelled to Saxmundham Sports Club today, and fielded first after winning the toss.

Saxmundham started well, adding 68 for the first wicket as S Riaz (6-0-34-0) and J Rawlings (4-0-36-0) were unable to make a breakthrough, though A Khaliq struck in the 10th over. The score progressed to 114/1 after 16 overs before N Hussain had the Saxmundham opener stumped by D Young. The next wicket feel soon afterwards as D Dellar held onto a sharp catch at midwicket off Khaliq. The Cavaliers then continued to take wickets at regular intervals, with Saxmundham unable to build a partnership of more than 21 as Khaliq (15-4-68-4) and Hussain (13-0-46-4) reduced our opponents to 184/8 after 36 overs. The late introduction of J Walton (1-0-2-2) then saw the innings come to a close, thanks to an inwinging yorker and a steepling catch by Dellar - Saxmundham ending on 198 all out after 39 overs, giving six (important) overs to the Cavaliers.

The Cavaliers reply started well, despite both openers showing a penchant for picking out fielders... The opening pair adding 71 together (the second best opening partnership of 2019 so far), with D Dellar bringing up an 82-ball fifty, before M Vinter (19) was caught at mid-off. The score then passed 100 as the Cavs inched towards the target, but Dellar (74) was the next to go to make the score 108/2 from 31 overs. The Cavaliers progressed to 124/2, but the quick wickets of P Kannan (7) and J Walton (4) saw the score slip to 130/4 before K Chowdhury and J Rawlings rebuilt through a good fifth wicket partnership of 29. With Chowdhury (32) caught at long-off, P Johnson (2) was the next to go as the Cavs fell to 172/6 after 46 overs (the additional six overs now coming into play). The returning J Rawlings then saw his enterprising innings (35 from 32 balls) ended in the 48th over as the Cavs reached 181/7, but N Hussain (9*) and S Riaz (15* from 10 balls) saw the Cavaliers claim a three wicket win, reaching 203/7 from 49.4 overs (just 8 balls left)!

Nadeem Leads Clinical Cavs

The Cavaliers Sunday XI travelled to Ardleigh today for a friendly and batted first after losing the toss.

After adding 15 runs together, openers U Akhter (11) and M Vinter (8) fell to make the score 24/2 after 11 overs. An attacking third wicket partnership of 56 between R Akhlaq and M Nadeem then saw the score race to 80/2 in 20 overs before Akhlaq was caught for 31. The Cavaliers continued to attack through Nadeem (who reached fifty from 44 balls) as he and A Khaliq (7) added a further 49 for the fourth wicket; the score reaching 129/4 after 28.3 overs. With 36 runs coming in the next four overs, Nadeem (92) was the next to go - Sharply caught at cover as he narrowly missed out on his maiden Cavs century. Two more wicket fell soon afterwards; those of B Aslam (20) and J Parks (0) to make it 175/7, but a run-a-ball 10 from B Munir helped to score move to 187/8 with three overs left. It was then left to S Riaz (13*) and D Young (4*) to add 20 runs in an unbeaten ninth wicket partnership to get the Cavaliers up to their final total of 207/8 in 40 overs.

The Ardleigh reply saw a wicket fall in the first over as S Riaz threw to D Young to run out one of the openers. With N Davidson (7-1-12-0) going wicketless, it was B Munir who claimed the next wicket to fall (Young claiming a thin edge behind). A Khaliq then took the next two wickets to fall while S Riaz (7-2-13-0) and B Aslam (5-0-12-0) were unable to make further breakthroughs despite tidy spells. The next two wickets were then claimed by M Nadeem (5-2-8-2), following up his fine batting performance with a good bowling display. With Ardleigh struggling to increase the run rate, the returning B Munir (8-0-20-2) and A Khaliq (8-1-31-3) took the next two wickets to fall as Ardleigh ended their 40 overs on 100/8 - The Cavaliers winning by 107 runs.

Sunday Side Stays Unbeaten

The Sunday XI welcomed The Real Oddies to Mill Road today.

Fielding first, F Munir (4-2-12-2) took the first two wickets to fall as N Davidson (3-0-29-0) and P Kannan (2-0-27-0) went wicketless. The score reached 89/2 before the introduction of stand-in captain M Nadeem who removed the dangerous C McCoy (60) before claiming a second quick wicket to make the Oddies slump to 89/4. Nadeem claimed the next two wickets to fall as the Oddies reached 100/6. Nadeem (6-2-17-5) finishing with his first five-wicket haul for the Cavaliers while A Khaliq (6-1-16-1) also claimed a wicket, thanks to a second catch behind the stumps by D Smith. With a U Akhter effecting a run out on debut, it was left to S Khan (1.3-0-1-1)  to finish off the innings as The Real Oddies were all out for 110 after 22.3 overs.

The Cavaliers reply started well, with D Smith and S Khan adding 45 for the first wicket before Smith (18) was dismissed. The first wicket prompted a Cavs collapse as U Akhter (0) and P Kannan (0) fell in quick succession. Khan (33) and M Nadeem (19) then saw the score up to 80/3 before both were out with the score on 87/5. With F Munir (11) out with victory within sight, it was left to O ur Rehman (14*) and B Aslam (5*) to see the Cavaliers up to their target; the team ending on 113/6 after 22.4 overs to win by four wickets.

Coggeshall Cause Cavs Collapse

The Saturday XI hosted Coggeshall III today at Mill Road.

After a heavy downpour caused a delayed start, the Cavaliers fielded first after losing the toss in a 35 overs-a-side contest. The Cavaliers started well, with D Young claiming a cath behind off the bowling of F Munir to make the score 10/1 after 5.2 overs, but Coggeshall recovered to 38/1 as S Riaz (5-1-35-0) conceded 26 runs from his last two overs. His replacemnet in the attack, N Davidson struck with his first ball of his spell while Munir (8-6-9-2) concluded a fine opening spell as Coggeshall slipped to 45/3. Two quick wickets from A Khaliq and Davidson (6-2-25-2) saw the score go from 76/3 to 77/5, but Coggeshall progressed past 100 before B Aslam and A Khaliq claimed the next two wickets to fall to make the score 104/7. The innings was then wrapped up quickly by Khaliq (6-0-32-4) and Aslam (3.2-1-13-2) as three wickets fell for just 1 run - Coggeshall all out for 118 in 28.2 overs.

The Cavaliers reply saw F Munir (2) depart early, but the score progressed to 34/1 before a Cavaliers collapse of monumental proportions against the swinging ball saw M Vinter (19), V Gedi (0), P Kannan (10), O ul Rehman (4), H Ahamed (1), S Riaz (0) and N Davidson (2) all dismissed as the Cavs lost 7 wickets for 12 runs, falling to 46/8 after 22.2 overs. D Young and B Aslam then added 17 for the ninth wicket to get the Cavs up to 63 before Aslam (7) was caught. The last pair then managed to earn the Cavaliers a batting point before Young (22) was caught off a leading edge, leaving A Khaliq (6*) not out as the Cavs were all out for 83 after 32.3 overs, losing by 35 runs.

Cavs Run Kesgrave Close

The Saturday XI hosted Kesgrave at Mill Road today and batted first after losing the toss.

After a tentative start (6/0 from 5 overs), the opening batsmen, F Murtaza and M Vinter soon found their rhythm, adding a further 51 runs from the next 11 overs before Vinter (11) was caught. With Murtaza (44) out soon afterwards, the Cavaliers were 60/2 after 18.4 overs but an attacking third wicket partnership saw 62 runs added in 11 overs - T Hijazi (25) the next wicket to fall to make the score 122/3 at the end of the 30th over. The Cavs continued to bat well though, and P Kannan brought up a 53-ball fifty before being caught at long-off for 57 soon afterwards. With R Rasheed (6) out soon after, the score was 168/5 - It was then left to K Chowdhury (19*) and H Ahamed (15*) to see the final score reach 192/5 after 45 overs.

The Kesgrave openers made a steady start in their reply, surviving against R Rasheed's opening spell of 8-3-31-0 while S Riaz made the first breakthrough via a Murtaza catch. The score progressed to 72/1, but quick wickets from N Davidson and A Khaliq (7-0-35-1) saw Kesgrave slip to 76/3. Davidson also claimed the next two wickets to fall in a fine spell of 9-1-24-3 while Murtaza (6-0-40-1) added to his tally of catches in 2019 with a good caught & bowled dismissal. With Kesgrave 149/6, Murtaza turned back to his openers, but Rasheed (12-3-48-0) and Riaz (8.1-1-36-1) were unable to prevent Kesgrave reaching 193/6 from 42.1 overs, winning by 4 wickets.

Cavs Hold Their Nerve

The Saturday XI travelled to Promenade Park to play Maldon III yesterday, and batted first after winning the toss.

The Cavaliers innings got off to a great start, with F Murtaza hitting the first ball of the match through cover point for four, but the Cavs were soon 7/1 as Murtaza (6) was bowled. The second wicket partnership then made steady progress, reaching 49/1 in 14 overs before D Dellar was forced to retire not out (hurt) with a back injury, bring K Chowdhury to the crease (1), though he was out in the 18th over. A promising stand of 24 for the third wicket saw the Cavaliers up to 81/2, but that soon became 81/4 as M Vinter (44) and S Riaz (0) fell in quick succession. P Kannan and D Young then got the Cavaliers up to 98, but two wicket in two balls saw Young (10) caught at slip and B Aslam (0) bowled. With T Hijazi (2) out soon afterwards, the Cavaliers were 104/7 after 34 overs. A superb eighth wicket partnership between Kannan and H Ahamed then saw the paid add 43 runs together in eight overs, raising the score to 147/8 upon the dismissal of Ahamed (15). The returning Dellar (16*) then held up an end as Kannan brought up his fifty from 70 balls via a towering six back over the pavillion (his third six of the innings). The Cavaliers ended their 45 overs on a respectable 159/8, with Kannan on 55 not out.

The Maldon reply started steadily, adding 28 in 10 overs before S Riaz claimed the first wicket of the innings, trapping the opener LBW, while B Aslam (6-1-14-0) went wicketless. A further 24 runs were added before Riaz added a second wicket to his tally during his opening spell of 10-3-20-2, then A Khaliq struck soon after as Maldon reached 54/3 after 20 overs. The Cavaliers kept breaking partnerships as they were forming though; Kannan (11-1-38-1) and Kahliq taking two quick wickets in the 27th and 28th overs as Maldon slipped to 76/5. The score passed 100 before the Cavaliers struck again - Khaliq (12-2-51-3) claiming his third. The introduction of F Murtaza to the attack then turned the game in the Cavaliers favour - Before he entered the attack, Maldon were 134/6, and by the time Murtaza (4-0-9-3) ended his spell, they were 150/9 with just one over left. With Riaz into his return spell, it fell to him to see the innings out; the first ball going for four and the second for two to make the score 156/9 with four balls left, only for the Maldon skipper to hit a ball to long-off, where Murtaza took a steepling pressure catch on the boundary to seal a tense 3 run win after 44.3 overs of the second innings, Riaz ending with figures of 11.3-3-30-3.

Cavs Wilt in the Heat

The Saturday XI travelled to Kesgrave last Saturday.

After losing the toss, the Cavaliers fielded first on the hottest day of 2019 so far. After opening bowlers N Davidson (4-0-20-0) and S Riaz toiled, the Kesgrave openers added 75 together before Riaz claimed the first wicket of the day. The score then passed 100 as K Chowdhury bowled well from one end while N Hussain began a 15-over spell, claiming his first wicket in his fourth over via a D Young catch. With Hussain continuing from one end, Chowdhury (10-0-57-0) completed his spell before H Ahamed (3-0-43-0) took over at his end. Kesgrave then added 122 runs for the third wicket, reaching 222/2 before B Aslam (3-0-20-1) bowled a superb yorker to end the partnership. Hussain then struck soon afterwards as Young claimed a second catch to remove Kesgrave opener S Dixey for a well made 102 - The score slipping to 227/4. The return of Riaz saw a wicket fall in the very next over as Kesgrave reached 233/5 after 41 overs before Hussain (15-2-55-3) claimed another wicket in his last over and Riaz (10-0-60-3) took his third in the last over of the innings. With the full 45 overs bowled, Kesgrave ended on 261/7.

The Cavaliers reply saw D Dellar (1) caught at point in the second over before K Chowdhury (3) and P Kannan (0) in quick succession - The score 13/3 after 5.2 overs. The innings was then rebuilt by F Murtaza and N Davidson, adding 61 for the fourth wicket as Murtaza compiled a 44-ball fifty. As the Cavs reached 74/3, Murtaza (63) and Davidson (3) were both dismissed to make it 74/5 and the prospect of an early finish seemed likely. The Cavaliers then fought back - A sixth wicket partnership of 41 between N Hussain and H Ahamed saw the score up to 115 before Hussain (25) was caught. A further 33 were added for the seventh wicket as S Riaz joined Ahamed (23), who was caught with the score on 148. The arrival of B Aslam (18) to the crease then saw the run rate go up as he smote two mighty sixes to help the Cavaliers up to 184/8 after 37.2 overs. It was then left to Riaz (44* - his highest score for the club) and D Young (10*) to see the Cavaliers achieve maximum batting bonus points - The innings ending on 210/8 as the Cavaliers lost by 51 runs.

Tendring Easily Beat Cavs

The Saturday XI hosted Tendring today, and the Cavs batted first after Dellar lost the toss for the first time this year.

The Cavaliers openers started well, surviving a scare in the fifth over as F Murtaza was dropped on 10 at point, with the score on 17/0. The openers maintained a run rate of around 5-per-over for the first 15 overs of the contest until Murtaza (39) was given out LBW to make the score 73/1. That first wicket prompted a couple of quick wickets as D Dellar (20) and G Duminy (1) were both out; the score reaching 76/3 after 19.1 overs. The Cavaliers then reached 89/3 before losing S Khan (10) and N Hussain (1) to make it 94/5. The score passed 100 before B Aslam (6) was caught, but quick wickets again saw the Cavaliers slip up, going from 112/6 to 112/8 as P Kannan (10) and N Davidson (9) were both dismissed. S Riaz and D Young then added 31 runs for the ninth wicket (the second-highest partnership of the innings) before Young (3) was caught with the score on 143 with eight balls remaining. It was then left to Riaz (25*) and A Khaliq (4) to see the Cavaliers up to their final score of 154 all out from 45 overs.

The econd innings saw the Cavaliers make an early breakthrough by N Davidson (6-0-33-1), with S Riaz (6-1-11-0) bowling well at the other end. The Tendring second wicket pairing then saw off spells from A Khaliq (4-0-20-0), N Hussain (7-0-28-0) and S Khan (3-0-20-0) as they amassed a partnership of 115 before B Aslam (3.2-0-25-1) bowled the other Tendring opener, J Jenno (88). A third wicket partnership of 118 between opener F Murtaza and M Nadeem (46), followed by a fourth wicket partnership of 46 with F Munir (32) saw the Cavaliers advance towards a good total before two wickets feel in one over, including that of Murtaza (116) - The score at the end of the 33rd over being 193/5. Several cheap wickets saw B Prabhu (3), P Kannan (0), R Rasheed (3), A Khaliq (11) and N Davidson (1) all dismissed as U Ghani (2*) was unbeaten with the Cavaliers ending their 40 overs on 239 all out.

Sunday Side Succeed at Stebbing

The Sunday XI began their 2019 league campaign today at Stebbing.
With Stebbing winning the toss they inserted the Cavaliers, who lost F Murtaza (0) early. A second wicket partnership of 76 saw R Akhlaq reach his maiden Cavaliers fifty before being dismissed for 51 soon afterwards - The score 84/2 in the 14th over. A further 27 runs were added by N Jalib and M Nadeem (10) for the third wicket before F Munir joined Jalib in adding 79 for the fourth wicket in just 12 overs as the Cavs reached 190/4 upon the dismissal of Munir (28). P Kannan (6) fell soon afterwards, followed by R Rasheed as the Cavaliers reached 216/6 in the 34th over. An attacking seventh wicket partnership between Jalib and B Prabhu (14) got the Cavs to 243/7 before N Davidson (7*) joined N Jalib (106*), who brought up his first century for the Cavaliers, as the the innings ended with the score on 258/7.
The Stebbing reply got off to a strong start as the openers added 77 for the first wicket, seeing off opening bowlers R Rasheed (7-1-32-0) and U Ghani (first spell of 5-0-43-0) before F Munir made the first breakthrough of the innings. A run out accounted for the second wicket as Stebbing's score moved to 102/2 before B Prabhu (7-1-40-1) took the third wicket to fall. The Cavs then claimed three quick wickets - Another run out, a second wicket for Munir (7-2-7-2) and a wicket for the returning U Ghani seeing the score move to 116/6. With N Davidson (4-0-22-0) unable to make a further breakthrough, Ghani (9-2-55-3) took the next two wickets to fall. With two more wickets required, Jalib turned to P Kannan (1-0-8-0) and A Khaliq to finish off the innings, with Khaliq (2.1-0-15-2) taking the required wickets as Stebbing were all out for 195 - The Cavaliers winning by 63 runs.

Chappel Cause Cavs Collapse

The Saturday XI played Chappel & Wakes Colne at home today, and batted first after winning the toss.

The Cavaliers openers added 14 together before D Dellar (2) hit a lofted drive to cover. A stabilising second wicket partnership of 32 almost saw the Cavs up to the first drinks break, but F Murtaza (30) was brilliantly caught (one-handed) by the Chappel 'keeper to make the score 46/2 at drinks. The score progressed to 63/2 before M Vinter (15) was caught at slip and A Mehta (10) was unluckily run out whilst backing up - The Cavs slipping to 66/4 before K Chowdhury and P Kannan added 29 together, taking the score to 95/4 as the famous curse of the Cavaliers collapse saw six wickets lost for just FOUR runs; K Chowdhury (15), P Kannan (6), N Hussain (0), B Aslam (0), S Riaz (2) and A Khaliq (0) all dismissed as D Young (0*) registered his 50th 'not out' for the club - The Cavaliers all out for 99 in 36.2 overs.

The Cavaliers defense of their small target saw both opening bowlers, S Riaz and A Khaliq, bowl very well as edges went wide of the slips before S Riaz induced an outside edge to claim a wicket via a slip catch by M Vinter. The Cavs then claimed two more quick wickets - S Riaz (6-0-21-2) claiming his second by a diving D Young down the legside, and A Khaliq picking up a wicket via a ridiculous one-handed grab by A Mehta at square leg - Chappel slipping to 35/3. With S Riaz finishing his spell, N Hussain bowled a double wicket maiden (including a well-judged catch by Khaliq) on his way to figures of 8-1-31-2 while A Khaliq continued his spell. Khaliq (12-5-24-2) then took his second wicket to leave Chappel 57/6, but a seventh wicket partnership of 43 saw Chappel reach 100/6 after 27.5 overs - B Alsam (1-0-8-0) and A Mehta (0.5-0-5-0) the other bowlers used as the Cavaliers lost by 4 wickets.

South Loughton Loss

The Cavaliers Sunday XI travelled to South Loughton today for a friendly, and fielded first by agreement.

With opening bowlers N Davidson (8-0-32-0) and F Munir (8-1-48-0) going wicketless, the South Loughton opening pair added 62 together before A Khaliq (8-0-23-1) took the first wicket to fall. The second wicket then added 56 more to take South Loughton to 118/1 as S Riaz (8-1-40-0) and the other change bowlers toiled, until F Murtaza claimed a sharp slip catch off the bowling of P Kannan (4-0-32-1). Murtaza then claimed a well-judged steepling catch at midwicket off the bowling of R Hossain (3-0-24-1) to reduce Loughton to 131/3. A fourth wicket partnership of 70 saw South Loughton pass 200 before K Chowdhury (1-0-2-1) claimed the fourth wicket to fall, but South Loughton ended their 40 overs on 212/4.

The Cavaliers reply began with a 37 run opening partnership before S Sumon (17) was the first dismissed batsman. The Cavaliers reached 57/1 in 10 overs before F Murtaza (18) was caught. Another promising partnership of 31 for the third wicket got the Cavaliers on track with the run rate, but N Jalib (21) was given out LBW despite an inside edge onto his pad. The Cavaliers then reached 118/3, but the quick wickets of F Munir (25) and K Chowdhury (1) saw the score slip to 125/5 before a sixth wicket partnership of 41 saw the Cavaliers up to 166/5 after 34 overs before P Kannan (49), R Hossain (23) and S Riaz (2) were out to leave the Cavs on 178/8 with 8 balls remaining. There was still time for one last wicket; N Davidson (6) stumped off the penultimate ball of the innings, as the Cavaliers finished on 184/9 - D Young (5*) and A Khaliq (0*) still there at the end as the Cavaliers lost by 28 runs.

Cavs Lose to Saxmundham

The Saturday XI recently played Saxmundham in the first home game of the season, and batted first after winning the toss.

The Cavs openers, F Murtaza nd D Dellar added 34 runs for the first wicket before Murtaza (17) was caught. The Cavaliers then reached 55/1 before a mini-collapse saw V Gedi (8), P Kannan (0) and J Parks (0) all dismissed as the score slipped to 59/4. Dellar was then joined by debutant B Aslam in a fifth wicket partnership of 42 as Dellar passed fifty and the Cavs passed 100, but Aslam (12) was bowled with the score on 101. When Dellar (55) was out to make the score 113/6, the Cavaliers had a full-on collapse, as T Hijazi (8), N Davidson (2), S Riaz (1) and A Khaliq (0) were all dismissed; the Cavaliers posting a score of 117 all out from 40.2 overs, with D Young (0*) the not out batsman.

The Cavaliers struck early through S Riaz (who took 1-12 in an opening 5 over spell) while fellow opening bowler A Khaliq (4-0-16-0) went wicketless. Saxmundham were then reduced to 37/2 with N Davidson (5.1-1-12-1) taking a wicket with his first delivery of the match via a juggled catch by D Young. With T Hijazi (4-0-21-0) and B Aslam (3-0-20-0) unable to make a further breakthrough, Saxmundham reached 83/2 before P Kannan struck twice in two overs to finish with figures of 3-0-15-2. With S Riaz (7-1-23-2) returning to claim another wicket, the opposition were 105/5 but soon reached ther target of 118 after just 26.1 overs - The Cavs losing by 5 wickets.

Cavs Win Despite Rain

The Cavaliers travelled to Marauders Cricket Field to play Coggeshall 3rd XI today.

The Cavs arrived to find the ground bathed in sunshine, but very cold due to icy winds. Captain D Dellar won the toss and opted to bat first in a match reduced to 35 overs a side... After two balls heavy rains forced the players off with the score 0/0 and, after waiting for the pitch to dry, the captains agreed to an early tea followed by a new 25 over a side match.

The Cavs lost the toss for the second attempt at a game and were asked to bat first on a damp wicket. Once again the rain forced players off after two balls, with the Cavaliers 2/0. After a short delay play continued until another rain delay caused a stoppage in the ninth over with the score 27/2 - Dellar (9) and D Smith (4) the two dismissed batsmen. With play resuming, opening batsman F Murtaza added 26 runs for the third wicket with P Kannan (3) before the latter was bowled. With N Davidson (0) out soon afterwards, Murtaza and T Hijazi added 25 runs for the fifth wicket before Hijazi (7) was dismissed just as the rain forced another break in play after 18 overs with the score on 87/5. Upon play resuming, Murtaza reached his fifty from 56 balls before three more wickets fell cheaply, with P Johnson (2), S Riaz (1) and A Khaliq (0) all dismissed as the Cavaliers reached 97/8 from 22.3 overs with just D Young left to bat. Murtaza and Young (0*) then added 35 runs in 15 balls in an unbeaten last wicket partnership as the Cavaliers posted 132/8 from their 25 overs - Murtaza finishing on 91 not out.

The Coggeshall openers started confidently, with N Davidson (2-0-10-0) going wicketless before before A Khaliq claimed his first wicket for the Cavaliers - T Hijazi claiming a catch at square leg in the eighth over. The next over then saw first change bowler S Riaz claiming the wicket of the other Coggeshall opener courtesy of a catch at cover by D Smith. Khaliq (8-1-36-2) then claimed a second wicket during an impressive debut spell for the club, while Riaz took two wickets (one caught by Murtaza) in an over to reduce Coggeshall to 62/5 after 16 overs. A Coggeshall counterattack saw their sixth wicket add 58 runs as Hijazi and D Smith (3-0-24-0) toiled between further rain delays. With Coggeshall reaching 120/5 after 22.5 overs, Hijazi (4-0-30-1) struck to remove the big-hitting Chantry (40) to create an opening for the Cavs. Coggeshall required 13 runs from 12 balls and captain Dellar turned to man-of-he-moment Murtaza who took two wickets in two balls for match figures of 1-0-1-2, reducing the equation to Coggeshall needing 12 from 6 balls. The returning Riaz (6.4-1-20-4) then claimed the last wicket to fall as Coggeshall were all out for 126 - The Cavaliers winning by 6 runs with 2 balls to spare!

Tour 2019 Cancelled & Other Fixture News

Sadly we have made the decision to cancel our planned tour to Derbyshire this year due to a lack of interest. Thank you to all of you who responded (yes/no/maybe) - The majority of players have responded and it has become clear that we lack the numbers required to cover the cost of accomodation, match balls and teas that we would require, let alone have the numbers to actually raise a side to play the matches. We have already notified the teams we were due to play, and hope to have sufficient numbers to have a tour in May 2020.

In other news, we have also been notified that Braintree have withdrawn from the NECL, meaning that the Sunday team have had their season reduced to 10 league fixtures, starting on Sunday 2nd June. With this in mind, we are in the process of trying to arrange some Sunday friendly fixtures; we already have two in place against South Loughton and Boreham and are seeking more. Also, we have accepted an invite to play in a charity 6-a-side cricket tournament in Castle Park on Saturday 20th April.

An updated fixture list will be circulated before the season starts once we have further details on friendly matches that we are still seeking/arranging.
