Cavaliers AGM & Awards Night

We are provisionally holding our Annual General Meeting on Saturday 26th January in the Colchester & EE pavilion at Castle Park - Please arrive at 7:30pm for an 8pm start. This meeting is your chance to have your say and vote on the topics which will affect you and the cricket club over the next year. We also have some positions available on the commitee for the 2019 season - Current vacant positions include the Sunday XI vice captain role, but you can run for any of the other committee roles if you have an interest.

If you would like to put your name forward for any of the roles, or have an item for the agenda, please let Dan Y know before the AGM date.

Once the AGM has been completed we will then move onto the awards ceremony with several awards up for grabs, including the much-coveted Player of the Year award, and the less-coveted Most Ducks of 2018 award. As with  the last couple of years, we are asking for members to vote for their choice for the Player of the Year award - The player with the most votes, wins!! All members can vote (although not for themselves!) either by email, text or in person at the AGM - please let Dan Y know who your Player of the Year is, and he'll compile them ready for the awards ceremony.

Looking forward to seeing you there!

Winter Indoor League

Are you missing your cricket fix? Do you wish there was something you could do about it during the winter? Well, this year we have the solution for you! As some of you may know already, the Cavaliers have entered the Braintree Indoor Cricket League (http://bdicl.org/) this winter. The matches take place on Sundays and last one hour, with teams having an innings of 12 overs each (which must be bowled within 26 minutes). A full list of rules can be found at http://bdicl.org/rules.html and we recommend reading the Playing Condition 'Laws' and 'Scoring' sections so you are familiar with how runs are scored, etc.

A list of fixtures will go on our website soon, or can be found on the league website. Fixtures and times for our umpiring/scoring duties have also been distributed by email; each team MUST umpire and score their allocated matches, which always take place immediately before/after they are playing. Availability texts will be sent for matches via the normal method.

If you need any further details or have any questions feel free to contact Kaiser or Dan Y, who will do their best to answer.

Cavs End 2018 Season on a High

The Sunday side travelled to Kelvedon & Feering with 10 men yesterday for their last game of the season and opted to bowl first after winning the toss.

The bowlers got the Cavaliers off to a fine start as R Rasheed and N Davidson kept things tight with Rasheed chipping in with the wicket of danger man Vickery (17) during an opening spell of 6-1-14-1 while Davidson (9-2-26-1) bowled unchanged. With S Riaz and V Gedi starting their spells economically, Kelvedon reached the drinks break with the score 60/2 after 20 overs. Post-drinks the Kelvedon batsmen started to attack M Nadeem (4-0-30-0) and V Gedi, but Gedi came back well - He broke a third wicket stand of 74 and dismissed both the set batsmen in consecutive overs, finishing with figures of 8-1-39-2. The returning S Riaz (7-1-26-0) helped to keep the run rate down while R Rasheed took a wicket upon his return to the attack; Rasheed seeing out the innings from the railway end to finish with 9-1-37-2. The final overs from the other end were bowled by H Ahamed (1-0-13-1) and F Murtaza (2-0-12-1), both claiming wickets as Kelvedon ended their innings on 189/7 after 40 overs.

The Cavaliers reply got off to a good start as openers I Ikram and F Murtaza defended well and took any runs that were on offer. During their time together Murtaza set a new club record for runs scored in a single league campaign and also passed 1,000 runs for the season. The opening pair added 48 together in just over 30 minutes before some confusion between the two saw Ikram (19) run out. That wicket brought skipper N Jalib to the crease; he and Murtaza proceeded to rotate the strike and hit boundaries off the loose balls during a second wicket partnership of 85 in 17 overs together (during which time Murtaza brouht up a 77 ball fifty), but Murtaza (55) was out with the score on 133. Two overs later N Jalib (59) was bowled (not long after bringing up a 46 ball fifty) as the scoreboard read 151/3 after 32 overs, but a quick-fire 35* from M Nadeem (including four boundaries in four balls at the end of the 35th over) set the stage for R Rasheed (9*) to win the match with a six over long-on to take the Cavaliers to 193/3 from 35.2 overs, winning by 7 wickets and going top of the league in the process in their last game of the season.

Cavs Collapse in Coggeshall Contest

The Saturday XI travelled to Earls Colne to play Cogeshall thirds today in the last Saturday game of the season.

The Cavs fielded first with N Davidson (13-1-37-2) and R Rasheed (13-3-30-0) opening the bowling. First change bowler S Riaz (4-0-12-1) took a wicket in his first over as the Coggeshall batsmen made starts without going onto a big score. With V Gedi (4-0-30-0) and P Kannan (3-0-20-1) also having spells, it was left to T Hijazi (3-0-30-1) to claim a late wicket as Coggeshall posted 182/5 from their 40 overs.

The Cavaliers reply saw D Dellar (3) dismissed early, but the second wicket added 27 runs together to make the score 37/1 before M Vinter (2) was bowled. A familiar Cavs collapse then saw I Ikram (0), F Murtaza (29), P Kannan (3) and V Gedi (0) all dismissed as the score slumped from 37/1 to 45/6. A further 12 runs were added for the seventh wicket before R Rasheed (4) was out and, with P Johnson (4) falling soon afterwards, the score was 65/8. The wicket of N Davidson (6) was the next to fall (77/9), but a last wicket stand of 22 between T Hijazi (11*) and S Riaz (4) saw the Cavs end on 99 all out from 24 overs, losing by 83 runs.

Cavs Go Big At Boxted

The Sunday XI made the short trip to Boxted today and batted first after winning the toss.

The Cavaliers opened their batting with I Ikram and F Murtaza, both of whom took the attack to Boxted, adding 85 runs for the opening partnership at a run rate just above 6 an over. The partnership was ended after a brilliant stop at first slip saw I Ikram (23) run out. The run rate was maintained in a second wicket partnership of 48 between Murtaza (who brought up a 47-ball fifty) and N Jalib, seeing the Cavaliers up to 133/1 after 22 overs but Murtaza (67) was eventually caught at long-off. An attacking third wicket partnership of 146* (at over 8 an over!) between Jalib and M Nadeem saw the Cavs accelerate; Jalib bringing up a 46-ball fifty and Nadeem reaching his fifty in 50 balls. The Cavaliers looked set for a score in the region of 250-260, but three sixes by Nadeem (77*) off the last three balls of the 39th over saw the Cavs race past 270, reaching 279/2 at the end of their 40 overs, with Jalib unbeaten on 88*.

The Cavaliers defence of their imposing total saw S Riaz claim a wicket in his 5 over opening spell while N Asim (1-0-2-0) opened at the other end, though he was soon replaced by V Gedi who bowled a fine spell of 9-5-6-2. With N Hussain (9-2-20-4) replacing Riaz the Boxted order collapsed, at one point reaching 32/6, before Hussain was replaced by H Ahamed (4-0-29-1) who claimed the next wicket to fall. With Riaz (6-1-12-2) returning to take the ninth wicket to fall, M Nadeem (7-3-12-1) then ended the match in the next over, taking the last wicket as Boxted were all out for 84 - The Cavaliers winning by 195 runs.

Bardwell Do The Double

The Saturday XI hosted Bardwell yesterday and, after winning the toss, elected to field first.

The decision to field saw the Cavaliers start well as Bardwell slipped to 21/3 with opening bowlers N Davidson (9-3-38-1) and R Rasheed (15-0-80-2) removing the Bardwell top order. Bardwell then recovered in spectacular fashion, adding 169 runs for the fourth wicket as S Riaz (4-0-20-0), V Gedi (5-2-14-0), D Smith (3-0-19-0) and J Walton (2-0-15-0) went wicketless. The late introduction of F Murtaza (7-1-41-3) saw him remove both of Bardwell's set batsmen though, but they ended their 45 overs on 234/6.

The Cavaliers reply saw F Murtaza (2) dismissed early on, followed by D Smith (0) to leave the score on 15/2. With Cavs captain D Dellar (30*) retiring hurt, P Kannan and I Ikram set about rebuilding the Cavaliers innings, getting the side up to 80/2 before Kannan (34) was caught. A fourth wicket partnership of 64 between Ikram and J Walton helped the Cavaliers recover, but the wicket of Ikram (45) left the score on 144/4. A further 20 runs were added for the fifth wicket, but R Rasheed (9) and JJ Elliston (0) fell in quick succession. It was then left to Walton (40*) and V Gedi (4*) to see the Cavaliers up to their final score of 177/6 from 45 overs, losing by 57 runs.

Dropped Catches & Collapses Cost Cavs

The Saturday XI hosted Copdock & OI 3rds today at Mill Road.

The Cavaliers lost the toss and were asked to bat first on a damp wicket. The innings started badly as D Dellar (0) was out in the first over, but F Murtaza and N Jalib batted well together to get the Cavaliers up to 45/1 before Murtaza (24) was run out due to confusion caused by a dropped catch! Jalib then combined with P Kannan in a third wicket partnership of 44 to get the Cavs up to 89/2 from 17 overs, but three quick wickets saw the score slip to 93/5 as Jalib (26), R Rasheed (0) and Kannan (23) all deaparted. With P Johnson (4) out soon afterwards, H Ahamed and N Hussain set about rebuilding the innings as the Cavaliers reached 130/6 from 31 overs but another cluster of wickets saw Hussain (4), H Ahamed (23) and S Riaz (1) dismissed as the Cavs reached 134/9 in the 34th over. The last pair then added 10 further runs before N Davidson (8) was out; D Young (1*) the undefeated batsman as the Cavs finished on 144 all out from 37.5 overs.

The Cavaliers kept things tight as the second innings began, with R Rasheed bowling an excellent opening spell of 10-6-6-1 and N Davidson opening with a spell of 5-0-8-0. With no wickets falling in the first 10 overs (Rasheed's wicket came in the 17th), Dellar turned to N Hussain who struck twice in his first two overs. With Copdock reaching 40/3 at drinks (22 overs), the Cavs were in control of the run rate, but a series of dropped catches and some frantic running from the Copdock batsmen saw the opposition recover before Hussain (11-3-52-4) struck twice in an over. After unlucky spells from S Riaz (6-0-27-0) and H Ahamed (1-0-15-0), Dellar turned back to his openers R Rasheed (14-6-22-1) and N Davidson (7-0-20-0) before F Murtaza (2.1-0-8-0) had a spell as Copdock reached 145/5 from 41.1 overs, winning by 5 wickets.

Cavaliers Go Top

The Sunday XI made the short journey to Mile End Recreation Ground to play Great Horkesley & Lexden. With captain N Jalib winning the toss, the Cavaliers batted first.

The innings started well as R Akhlaq and F Murtaza added 36 runs for the opening partnership in seven overs before Akhlaq (14) was bowled. The second wicket fell soon afterwards with the score on 42/1 as a mix up saw both batsmen at the non-strikers end, with N Jalib (1) the man run out. The Cavs then rebuilt well as the third wicket added 78 runs with attacking strokes - Murtaza bringing up a 51-ball fifty in the process, but I Ikram (29) was bowled to end their partnership to make the score 120/3. Murtaza was now joined by T Hijazi (20), who hit his first ball for a boundary and continued to attack as the pair added 45 for the fourth wicket. It was then the turn of M Nadeem (10) to support Murtaza as the Cavaliers approached the 200 mark; Nadeem's dismissal making it 195/5. The last four overs saw 28 runs added between Murtaza (reaching his century in 93 balls) and H Ahamed (15*) as the Cavaliers ended their 40 overs on 223/5 with Murtaza finishing unbeaten on 111*.

The Cavaliers started well in their defence of 223 as GHLCC lost their first wicket in the second over - V Gedi claiming a caught & bowled chance. The opposition score progressed to 19/1 in the fifth over, but by the end of the ninth they were 24/5 as Gedi and fellow opening bowler M Nadeem (7-0-25-2) dismissed the top order. Following the opening spells, Jalib turned to R Akhlaq (3-0-31-0) and H Ahamed, who followed up last week's 5-fer by claiming a wicket a point from his first delivery of the match. With Ahamed (4-2-15-3) seeing two more catches going to Murtaza at slip, C Finch (3-1-6-0) and T Hijazi (2-0-4-1) reduced GHLCC to 119/9 while S Gupta (3-0-15-0) replaced Ahamed. In search of the winning wicket V Gedi (6.3-0-25-4) was brought back, claiming the wicket of R Mahmood (65) with his third ball back into the attack as GHLCC were all out for 125. The Cavaliers won by 98 runs and have now gone one point clear at the top of division three in the NECL!

Chase Against Copford

The Saturday XI welcomed Copford II to Mill Road today and were asked to field first as Copford won the toss.

The Cavaliers got off to an excellent start as S Riaz (10-0-44-2) removed both Copford openers to make the score 27/2 while fellow opener R Rasheed swung the new ball well. Rasheed made the next breakthrough to make it 52/3 just before spinner N Hussain was introduced to the attack in place of S Riaz. Two lengthy spells were bowled as Rasheed (13-0-58-3) chipped away at the top order while Hussain bowled to the close at the other end, claiming 15-2-56-3 as he removed the middle order. While Hussain worked on dismissing the middle order, P Kannan (4-0-13-0) and F Murtaza (3-0-9-1) bowled spells at the end of the innings as Copford ended their 45 overs on 195/9.

The Cavs reply began with a 31 run opening stand before D Dellar (17) was yorked by the Copford opening bowler. Dellar's opening partner, F Murtaza, then reached a fifty in 44 balls before being dismissed for 54 to end a 60 run partnership with N Jalib to leave the score on 91/2 after 15 overs. A couple of wickets fell soon afterwards as I Ikram (2) and P Kannan (10) were both out. With Jalib (26) out with the score on 122, J Corcos and P Johnson attempted to rebuild, but upon reaching 130/5 both Johnson (1) and Corcos (10) were dismissed to make it 130/7. The nerves of the Cavaliers players were soon settled by a superb 66 run unbeaten partnership between R Rasheed (43*) and N Hussain (20) which saw the Cavs up to a winning total of 196/7 in 40.1 overs, winning by 3 wickets.

Cavaliers Defeat Unbeaten Stebbing

The Sunday XI hosted league leaders Stebbing at Mill Road today.

After losing the toss, the Cavs were asked to bat first and added 116 runs for the first wicket in 18 overs, with F Murtaza bring up a 41-ball fifty before R Akhlaq (47) was caught at long-on. An injured hamstring then didn't stop Murtaza from combining with N Jalib in a second wicket partnership of 62, bringing the score up to 178/1 before Murtaza (82) and F Munir (0) were both dismissed to make it 178/3. Jalib then registered his own fifty (from 46 balls) during a fourth wicket partnership with M Nadeem (10) who was dismissed to make the score 226/4.Jalib (71*) and R Rasheed (24*) then maintained the run rate to see the Cavaliers up to a very impressive 273/4 from their 40 overs.

The Stebbing reply saw an early run out as N Jalib and F Munir combined for the first wicket, then F Munir (9-1-45-2) claimed the next two wickets to fall to leave Stebbing 57/3, while R Rasheed (9-0-51-0) went wicketless at the other end. Skipper Jalib then turned to his spinners, with M Nadeem (7-1-28-0) and H Ahamed combining as Stebbing reached 106/3 before Ahamed claimed three quick wickets (two caught behind by Young) to reduce the opposition to 109/6. Stebbing added a further 20 runs before Ahamed claimed two more wickets (Young claiming a third catch) on his way to his maiden 5-fer for the Cavaliers, finishing with 9-0-55-5. With Stebbing adding runs while J Corcos (2-0-13-0) and S Gupta (2-0-20-0) went wicketless, R Akhlaq (2-0-10-1) made the last breakthrough of the innings, Stebbing ending their 40 overs on 236/9 as the Cavs won by 37 runs.

No Way Past Noman for Sudbury

The Saturday XI hosted Sudbury at Mill Road yesterday and batted first.

The Cavaliers started by adding 35 runs for the first wicket, but the dismissal of D Dellar (18) was oon followed by thoe of F Murtaza (23) and M Vinter (1) as the score slipped to 45/3. The Cavs recovered though a fourth wicket partnership of 24 but two quick wickets, those of P Kannan (4) and K Chowdhury (16) meant the Cavaliers were 69/5 in the 20th over. D Smith and I Ikram then combined to add 50 runs together before Ikram (28) was caught, but a further 30 runs were then added for the seventh wicket before Smith (36) was the next man out, the score on 149/7 after 33 overs. N Hussain and S Riaz managed to add a further 30 runs in 6 overs to get the Cavaliers up to 179, but the wicket of Riaz (4) brought N Davidson to the crease, and he and Hussain got the cavaliers up to their final total of 222/8 after 45 overs, with Hussain (51*) bringing up his fifty while Davidson was unbeaten on 19*.

The Cavaliers opened with N Davidson and JJ Elliston, with Davidson claiming two wickets in his opening spell of 7-1-22-2. Run Fest at the Rugby Club

The Saturday XI hosted Coggeshall today and fielded first after D Dellar lost the toss.

The Coggeshall batsmen started well, seeing off opening spells from N Davidson (5-0-18-0) and R Rasheed before Dellar turned to his spinners, K Chowdhury (5-0-38-0) and N Hussain. Having added 97 for the first wicket, Hussain then made the initial breakthrough before adding a second wicket during his long spell of 15-0-70-2. The Coggeshall batsmen then reached the 36th over without losing another wicket, making the score 225/2 as P Kannan (7-0-52-0) and the returning Rasheed (7-0-50-0) were unable to make further inroads into the opposition line up, though the introduction of F Murtaza to the attack saw the score slip to 231/5 within two overs! The Cavaliers then worked hard to keep the run rate down towards the end of the innings, with Murtaza (6-1-28-5) taking a wicket from the final ball of the innings to claim his maiden 5-fer for the Cavs. The innings ending on 268/7 from 45 overs.

The Cavaliers didn't get off to the best start in the reply, losing D Dellar (7) early on in the chase. What followed though was a 16 over partnership worth 116 runs as F Murtaza and M Vinter joined forces to get the Cavs up to 135/1 before Murtaza (85) was caught via a top edge. The momentum of the innings was maintained through a third wicket partnership of 126 in 18 overs between Vinter and I Ikram; the score reaching 261/2 before Ikram (60) was dimissed after registering his second fifty for the club. With just eight runs needed for victory, P Kannan (8*) joined M Vinter (88*) in seeing the Cavaliers to a winning score of 271/3 in 42.4 overs, winning by 7 wickets.

After a delayed start (both sides were waiting for players to arrive), Coggeshall added 89 for the first wicket as R Rasheed and M Nadeem (9-0-56-0) went wicketless in their opening spells, but V Gedi (7-1-31-1) made the initial breakthrough. A further 46 runs were added to the score before P Kannan removed the other Coggeshall opener while R Akhlaq (2-0-17-0) replaced Gedi. The Cavaliers then took regular wickets, with Kannan (9-0-45-3) claiming the next two to fall before F Murtaza (6-0-7-3) bowled an excellent spell at the end of the innings. With R Rasheed (7-2-26-1) returning to take a wicket in the last over, the Cavaliers restricted Coggeshall to 184/8 from their 40 overs.

The Cavaliers reply got off to a great start as M Vinter and F Murtaza brought up the 50 after just 7 overs, and had scored 100 for the first wicket by the drinks break at 15 overs, Murtaza bringing his fifty up after just 37 balls. Soon after the break Murtaza was bowled with the score on 105, but captain N Jalib continued the momentum, adding 47 runs with Vinter for the second wicket. Once Jalib (29) was caught out, Vinter (who reached his fifty in 78 balls) and I Ikram added a further 20 together to make the score 172/2, but Vinter (54) was bowled with the Cavaliers just 13 short of victory. M Nadeem (1*) got off strike with his first ball faced, leaving Ikram (24*) to win the game with a four and a six; the Cavs scoring 185/3 in 31 overs to win by 7 wickets.

Close Game at Dunmow

The Saturday XI travelled to Dunmow today and fielded first in hot conditions after Dunmow won the toss.

Opening bowler R Rasheed struck early on while N Davidson (6-0-27-0) toiled at the other end. Rasheed (11-0-82-2) then struck again at the end of his opening spell as Dunmow reached 62/2. The introduction of N Hussain then brought another wicket, via a catch at slip by F Murtaza, but a fourth wicket partnership of 86 saw Dunmow up to 173/2 while Hussain and B Prabhu (7-0-38-0) were unable to make a breakthrough. Once S Riaz broke the partnership, the Cavaliers struck several times; V Gedi effected a run out with an excellent throw, S Riaz (6-0-29-2) claimed a second wicket via a catch by a diving D Young, and Hussain (15-1-45-3) claimed two more (caught by Davidson and Murtaza) as Dunmow slipped to 181/8. The Dunmow ninth wicket pair then batted well at the end of the innings before D Young effected a direct hit run out. With no more wickets falling, Dunmow reached 237/9 from their 45 overs.

The Cavaliers reply began with an opening partnership of 33 before D Dellar (16) was bowled by a ball that kept low. The second wicket partnership got the Cavs past 50 before V Gedi (1) was bowled, but a third wicket partnership of 49 between F Murtaza and P Kannan saw the Cavs to 101/3 upon the dismissal of Murtaza (50). The score reached 134 before N Hussain (13) was dismissed, with P Kannan (46) following soon after in the 21st over. The Cavaliers were well above the Dunmow score at the same point of their innings, but we had lost more wickets at the same stage. With two quick wickets, those of B Prabhu (12) and N Davidson (4), the Cavaliers rebuilt around through an eighth wicket partnership between R Rasheed and P Johnson before Rasheed (42) was well caught on the boundary. S Riaz then joined Johnson as the score passed 200, but Johnson (11) was dismissed as the score reached 214/9. The last pair then got the Cavaliers within 15 of the Dunmow total, but Riaz (10) was caught behind as the Cavs ended on 222 all out after 41.2 overs, with D Young (0*) the not out batsman as the Cavaliers lost by 15 runs.

New Record at Chantry Park

The Saturday XI travelled to Chantry Park to play Ipswich & East Suffolk today and batted first.

Cavaliers openers D Dellar and S Gilhooly started the innings well, adding 89 runs together by the first drinks break after 15 overs with Gilhooly passing fifty just before the break. Immediately after play restarted Dellar (32) was caught, but a second wicket partnership of 41 between Gilhooly and D Smith saw the Cavs reach 130/1 at the halfway point of the innings. After Smith (16) was dismissed the Cavaliers built a great third wicket partnership, during which time Gilhooly registered the first Cavs hundred of 2018, and continued past 150 as he and J Walton (39) added 127 together; the score 257/3 after the wicket of Walton. By the time the next wicket fell Gilhooly had set a new record for the highest individual score by a Cavaliers batsman, surpassing his previous best of 163 against Maldon in 2005. After the wickets of K Chowdhury (2) and R Rasheed (1), Gilhooly was finally dismissed for a record 185 (130 balls, 35 fours, 4 sixes) as the Cavaliers reached 289/6 after 41 overs. The score then passed 300 (only the second time the Cavaliers have passed that mark) as N Davidson and P Johnson (8*) added 33 together. With Davidson (23) stumped off the penultimate ball of the innings, a boundary from N Hussain (4*) off the last ball saw the Cavs up to 326/7 from their 45 overs.

The Ipswich & ES reply got off to a good start as their openers added 49 together before R Rasheed claimed the first wicket to fall and N Hussain then ran out the other opener with a direct hit soon afterwards to make it 54/2. A further 27 runs were added by the third wicket partnership, but quick wickets from N Davidson (7-0-57-2), another from Rasheed (7-1-25-2) and a wicket by S Riaz (4-0-20-1) saw Ipswich & ES lose four wickets for just nine runs, slipping to 90/6. The opposition then passed 100 before N Hussain (3-1-15-1) claimed the next wicket to fall before Dellar turned to K Chowdhury (1-0-1-0) and D Smith (1.3-0-3-1) to finish off the innings - Ipswich & East Suffolk being all out for 131, losing by 195 runs.

Cavs Fail at the Garrison

The Sunday XI travelled to the Garrison ground today to face The Real Oddies.

With skipper C Finch winning the toss, the Cavaliers fielded first and made two early breakthroughs through R Rasheed (9-0-38-2) as the Oddies were reduced to 20/2. A third wicket partnership of 41 helped them recover, but V Gedi (9-0-40-1) claimed the next wicket to fall. A further 41 runs were added to the total before H Ahamed claimed his maiden Cavaliers wicket, and once the Oddies reached 124/4 the Cavs spinners, H Ahamed (9-0-25-3) and C Finch (5-0-23-1) made three quick breakthroughs, making the score 126/7. The Cavaliers then claimed one more wicket as opening bowler S Riaz (8-1-34-1) returned. The Oddies ended their innings on 162/8 from their 40 overs.

The Cavaliers openers added 14 runs at the beginning of their reply before A Rasheed (9) was the first batsman out. The Cavs reached 24/1 but three quick wickets, those of R Akhlaq (13), S Gupta (0) and I Ikram (5), saw the score slip to 29/4. Wickets then fell at regular intervals (the next four partnerships all added 13 or 14 each) as R Rasheed (7), H Ahamed (13), D Young (5) and V Gedi (20) were all dismissed. With C Finch (0) the last man to go, the Cavaliers were all out for 84 after 31.5 overs, with S Riaz not out on 5, losing by 78 runs.

Big Loss to Dunmow

The Saturday XI hosted Dunmow IIs at Mill Road today and fielded first after winning the toss.

Opening bowlers N Davidson and R Rasheed bowled well but without reward, with edges and aerial shots either not going to hand or being dropped. The Dunmow openers took full advantage as they added 62 for the opening partnership before S Riaz (5-0-20-1) took the first wicket. The next over saw skipper D Dellar take the next wicket (caught by Riaz, diving forwards) to reduce the opposition to 62/2. Dunmow then added 35 further runs to the total before Dellar (11-1-57-2) took his second wicket, but Dunmow then had a fourth wicket partnership of 90, with H Ahamed (4-0-24-0) going wicketless while Dellar continued his spell. The partnership was broken by P Kannan (6-0-47-2), who added a second wicket to is tally shortly afterwards while N Davidson (10-0-56-1) and R Rasheed (9-0-55-1) claimed late wickets upon their return as Dunmow ended their 45 overs on 285/7.

The Cavaliers reply started well, adding 34 runs in 4.2 overs before S Gilhooly (20; all in boundaries) was caught at slip. With the Cavs losing H Ahamed (0) and M Vinter (9) soon afterwards, the scoreboard looked less healthy at 38/3 after 8.2 overs. P Kannan and R Rasheed then saw the score up to 57/3, but regular wickets saw the Cavaliers reduced to 76/7 as Rasheed (3), J Corcos (4), Kannan (21) and N Davidson (2) were all caught. The home side then got within touching distance of a batting bonus point as D Dellar and P Johnson got the total up to 92/7, but the wickets of Johnson (3) and S Riaz (1) saw the score slip to 95/9 as D Young joined Dellar at the crease. The last pair then concentrated on gaining batting points, frustrating Dunmow by adding 64 runs for the tenth wicket (10 short of the club record) in 10 overs before Dellar (65) was caught at slip. The Cavaliers ended on 159 all out from 44.2 overs, with Young unbeaten on 10*.

Another Sunday Win

The Sunday XI played Great Horkesley & Lexden at home yesterday and fielded first.

The Cavaliers got off to a good start with F Munir (9-2-40-1) claiming an early wicket, although fellow opening bowler R Rasheed (9-0-44-0) went wicketless. With V Gedi (9-0-27-0) also unable to make a breakthrough, captain N Jalib turned to F Murtaza (5-0-28-1) who claimed the next wicket to fall, making the score 59/2. The next wicket was claimed by C Finch (2-0-18-1) to make the score 126/3, although A Ali (4-0-27-0) and R Ahklaq (2-0-13-0) were not able to add another wicket as GH&L ended their 40 overs on 203/4, with the fourth wicket coming late in the innings via a run out by V Gedi.

The Cavaliers reply saw wicketkeeper I Ikram (0) fall early, but a second wicket partnership of 40 saw the score reach 56/1 before R Akhlaq (22) was the next to go. With T Janganan (8) being dismissed soon afterwards it was left to a fourth wicket partnership of 110 between opener F Murtaza and F Munir to put the Cavaliers within touching distance of a win at 175/3 before Murtaza (73) was out LBW. An unbeaten fifth wicket partnership between Munir (95*) and N Jalib (2*) then saw the Cavs home, reaching 208/4 in just 23.5 overs for a six wicket win.

9 June 2018

Another Cavs Low-Scorer

The Saturday XI hosted Halstead III today and batted first after losing the toss.

The Cavaliers got off to a steady start, with D Dellar and E Parry adding 39 for the first wicket in 12 overs before Parry (1) was caught behind. The Cavs then lost two wickets with the score on 46, with F Murtaza (5) and J Walton (0) the men to go, before debutant S Gupta scored his first runs for the club prior to being caught at midwicket to make the score 55/4 after 16.4 overs. A fifth wicket partnership of 27 then helped the Cavaliers rebuild, but a superb reflex catch at midwicket accounted for S Gilhooly (12), triggering a "Cavaliers Collapse" as the team slipped from 82/4 to 87/9; D Dellar (50), K Chowdhury (1), P Johnson (0) and JJ Elliston (4) all being dismissed in the 7 overs after Gilhooly's departure. Finally, a tenth wicket partnership of 24 saw the Cavaliers pass three figures, reaching 111 all out in 42.3 overs before S Riaz (15) was the last man out, with D Young unbeaten on 7 not out.

The Cavs reply then got off to a great start, taking a wicket with the third ball of the innings! Opening bowler S Riaz (9-2-20-1) was unlucky to not take more wickets, seeing edges fall short or just evade fielders, while F Murtaza (7-2-17-0) bowled well enough to beat the edge several times. Halstead advanced their score to 48/1 before K Chowdhury (8-2-25-1) claimed the next wicket to fall during his fine spell of spin bowling. It was then the turn of JJ Elliston (7-3-20-1) to take a wicket, bowling the Halstead #4 to make it 67/3. With Halstead losing in on their target, the captain turned to J Walton (3.1-0-13-1) who then took a wicket with his second ball bowled while D Dellar (3-1-7-0) kept things tight at the other end. It was to no avail though, as Halstead scored 113/4 in 37.1 overs to win by 6 wickets.

Cavs Beat Bergholt's Banks

The Sunday XI played their first home game of the season yesterday, hosting West Bergholt.

Upon winning the toss, captain N Jalib invited Bergholt to bat first. After an early wicket (the score was 1/1), R Rasheed (9-4-21-3) then made two further breakthroughs to reduce the opposition to 45/3 while his fellow opening bowler B Prabhu (6-0-23-0) went wicketless. First change bowler F Munir (6-1-22-2) then took the next wickets to fall as Bergholt went from 60/3 to 60/5. P Kannan then took two wickets to make the score 73/6 before C Finch (1-0-30-0) was unlucky to have to bowl to Bergholt's J Banks. With F Murtaza claiming the wicket of Banks (98), it was left to Kannan (6-2-12-3) and F Murtaza (3.2-0-12-2) to take the last two wickets as West Bergholt were all out for 128 in 31.2 overs.

The Cavaliers reply then started very well as F Murtaza and N Jalib added 86 for the first wicket before Murtaza was caught behind for 54. Jalib (41*) and H Ahamed (20*) then saw the Cavaliers to a winning total adding 43 for the second wicket; the Cavaliers ending on 129/1 after just 15 overs for a nine wicket win!

Bowled Out By Bardwell

The Saturday XI travelled to Bardwell today. With captain D Dellar maintaining his losing streak at the toss, the Cavaliers were invited to bat first.

Against some accurate and sharp swing bowling, openers Dellar and M Vinter did well to add 26 runs together before Vinter (7) was caught behind in the 11th over. With Bardwell's first-change bowler claiming three wickets in his first three overs, the Cavs were then reduced to 41/4 as F Murtaza (2), Dellar (28) and J Walton (1) were all dismissed. A fifth wicket partnership of 29 between D Smith and K Chowdhury then saw the Cavaliers reach 70, but Chowdhury (16) was then caught at mid-off. With JJ Elliston (0) out at the end of the 28th over, the Cavaliers were 79/6 and up against it... So a "Cavaliers Collapse" was not the best thing to happen; once Smith (15) was out, he was quickly followed by V Gedi (0), D Young (1) and S Riaz (1). With P Johnson (1*) undefeated, the Cavaliers were all out for 85 in just 34 overs.

With the tea not ready, the teams immediately turned around for the second innings, with S Riaz (4-1-13-0) and V Gedi (4-0-17-0) unable to break the opening partnership before the tea break. In the first over after tea, K Chowdhury broke the opening partnership by bowling the Bardwell wicketkeeper around his legs, while F Murtaza bowled well at the other end. Chowdhury (5-0-19-2) then made a second breakthrough with the last ball of his spell as J Walton caught a top edge at midwicket. Next to take a wicket was D Smith (2-0-10-1) as S Riaz took a good running catch at mid-on, and in the next over F Murtaza (7-1-22-1) took a well-deserved wicket as D Young took a diving one-handed catch down the leg side to reduce Bardwell to 72/4 after 20 overs. With the game nearing a conclusion (the score was 84/4 when he came on), JJ Elliston was encouraged to bowl a six-wicket maiden to force the win. With F Murtaza catching the Bardwell captain at point off the first ball of the over there was a possibility, but Bardwell scored their required 2 runs as they finished on 86/5 from 23 overs, Elliston finishing with figures of 1-0-2-1.

Tour Ends at Hundall

The Cavaliers Tour XI made the short journey to Hundall today for the first time.

Once again the Cavs found themselves fielding first with N Davidson (6-0-32-0) and T Mayhew (6-1-30-0) again unlucky to go wicketless. With C Finch (6-0-46-0), W Newton (5-0-10-0) and P Johnson (3-0-17-0) also going without a wicket, it was left the the captain T Chedgey (3-0-20-2) to make the only breakthroughs of the day. With D Young (1-0-9-0) bowling the last over of the day, Hundall ended their 30 overs on 168/2.

The Cavaliers reply got off to a slow start before E Parry (10) was the first man out. A second wicket partnership of 20 in 12 overs then saw the Cavs up to 32/1 before N Davidson (16) was next to go. With C Finch (6) the next to go, the Cavaliers were 44/3 after 21.2 overs. After S Pillalamarri (6) was dismissed with the score on 50, P Johnson and D Young added 20 together before Johnson (2) was out. A quick-fire 19 from W Newton saw the Cavs up to 89/6 upon his dismissal with 7 balls remaining. With 14 coming from those remaining balls, the Cavs ended their 30 overs on 103/6 with D Young (26*) and T Chedgey (1*) the not out batsmen.

An excellent and friend game ended with N Davidson being nominated as the Cavaliers Man of the Match by Hundall.

Peter Rawlings Memorial Cup Match

The touring XI contested the first Peter Rawlings Memorial Cup Match against Apperknowle yesterday and fielded first after observing a minutes silence in memory of Peter.

Opening bowlers N Davidson (10-0-42-0) and T Mayhew (9-0-58-0) bowled well but without reward as the opposition openers added 73 together before D Dellar claimed two wickets in two balls to make the initial breakthrough. With K Chowdhury (6-0-41-0) also bowling well, it was Dellar (8-1-48-3) who took the third wicket to fall as the score reached 115/3. With C Finch (5-0-28-2) taking two more wickets while captain S Pillalamarri (2-0-9-0) went wicketless, Apperknowle ended their 40 overs on 233/5.

The Cavaliers reply saw M Vinter (3) dismissed early on, but a second wicket partnership of 40 between S Gilhooly and K Chowdhury saw the Cavs up to 49 before Chowdhury (25) was out. The Cavaliers then lost two quick wickets as E Parry (4) and Gilhooly (26) both departed. Wickets then fell at regular intervals without any partneships being formed, with S Pillalamarri (8) and P Johnson (2) the next to go. A battling 26 from D Dellar helped the Cavs pass 100, but his wicket and those of D Young (9), C Finch (2) and N Davidson (6) saw the Cavaliers finish on 123 all out from 31.2 overs, losing by 110 runs with T Mayhew unbeaten on 2*.

Cavs Edge Out Chatsworth

After the disappointment of a rained off game at Whittington on the first day of tour, the touring Cavaliers travelled to a sunny Chatsworth for their first taste of cricket for the weekend.

The Cavs lost the toss and were asked to bowl first, with N Davidson (7-1-28-0) finding good bounce at one end while fellow opening bowler T Mayhew (7-0-28-1) made an early breakthrough thanks to a superb diving catch from a flying Davidson. First change bowler J Lawson (7-0-31-0), K Chowdhury and captain C Finch (7-0-33-0) bowled well without reward before D Dellar made a return to bowling (medium pace outswing), claiming a sharp caught and bowled chance on his way to figures of 3-1-5-1. With P Johnson (2-0-12-0) also unable to make a breakthrough, Finch returned to Chowdhury (7-0-40-1) who claimed a late wicket before Davidson and Young combined for a run out; Chatsworth ending their 40 overs on 181/4.

The Cavaliers reply started well, with D Dellar and M Vinter adding 36 together before Vinter (20) got a thin edge through to the Chatsworth 'keeper. With E Parry (1) out soon afterwards, a third wicket partnership of 56 steadied the innings before S Gilhooly (30) was out just as he was threatening to go big; the Cavs now 94/3. The score moved onto 117/3 before Dellar was the next batsman dismissed, falling just short of a half century (49). The Cavaliers got the required runs down to 50 with 10 overs remaining, but both P Johnson (2) and K Chowdhury (19) fell in quick succession. A seventh wicket partnership of 18 between N Davidson and J Lawson got the Cavs within 29 runs of the target (7 overs remaining) before Lawson (4) was out caught. With Davidson and D Young running hard, the Cavaliers got up to 173/7 before Davidson (26) was bowled with victory in sight. With just 9 needed from 3 overs, Young (13*) was joined by captain C Finch (3*). Some quick ones and twos later, and the Cavaliers had won by two wickets with three balls remaining; the score 182/8 from 39.3 overs.

Cavs Fall Short at Copford

The Saturday XI travelled to Copford, winning the toss and electing to bowl first.

The opening bowlers, N Davidson (5-1-18-0) and S Riaz, kept things tight as Copford reached 29/0 in the first 9 overs. D Dellar then turned to his spinners, but the Copford opening pair added 82 together before U Ghani (15-1-72-2) made two breakthroughs; the second one making the score 107/2. A third wicket partnership of 43 then saw Copford reach 150/2, but N Hussain (15-2-46-3) took three quick wickets (including two from the last two balls of his spell) as Copford slipped to 153/5. The last 7 overs then saw Copford add 60 runs off the bowling of the returning Riaz (7-0-26-0) and V Gedi (3-0-28-0) as they reached 214/5 from their 45 overs.

The Cavaliers reply started with an opening partnership of 51 between D Dellar and E Parry before Parry was bowled for 15. With F Murtaza (2) out soon afterwards, Dellar and P Kannan saw the Cavs up to 94/2, with Dellar (45) the next man out. With R Rasheed (4) out soon afterwards, the Cavaliers were 99/4. A fourth wicket partnership of 31 between Kannan and K Chowdhury got the Cavs up to 130/4, but a collapse saw Kannan (20), V Gedi (1) and N Hussain (0) all out as the score slipped to 131/7. The chances of a Cavaliers win looked slim, but Chowdhury and N Davidson added 53 runs for the eighth wicket to give the team a chance of victory before Chowdhury (47) was bowled with the score on 184. Despite the best efforts of Davidson (27*), the wickets of U Ghani (0) and S Riaz (0) meant the Cavaliers were 199 all out from 45 overs, losing by 15 runs.

Poke in the Eye for The Cavs

The Saturday XI travelled to Eye today and batted first upon losing the toss.

The Cavaliers made steady progress at the start of their innings with openers D Dellar and J Walton (4) adding 15 for the first wicket. With R Akhlaq (5) and P Kannan (2) also departing, the Cavs had reached 41/3 in 14.1 overs, but Dellar was joined by R Rasheed in a fourth wicket partnership of 67 in 13 overs, with Dellar bringing up the first fifty of the season for the Cavaliers. Upon the dimissal of Dellar (52), the Cavaliers experienced their usual collapse as they slipped from 108/3 to 122/8, with J Corcos (0), Rasheed (38), P Johnson (3) and V Gedi (0) all following the skipper back to the pavilion in a 5 over period. A ninth wicket partnership of 20 improved matters before D Young (3) was dismissed, but the Cavaliers reached 157 all out in 40.1 overs once S Riaz (0) was dismissed - N Davidson batting responsibly for 22 not out at the end. Bowling performance of the day went to Eye's R Lockwood though, with impressive figures of 12-3-21-7!!

The Cavaliers struck early in their defence of 157, with opening bowler R Rasheed and N Davidson removing both Eye openers. With Davidson (7-0-37-2) and Rasheed striking again, Eye were 47/4 after 12.3 overs. Eye then had a couple of good partnerships as the bowlers struggled with their lines; S Riaz (6.4-0-32-0) goung wicketless, though V Gedi (5-0-16-1) managed to claim a wicket. With P Kannan (6-0-21-1) breaking another partnership, Dellar turned back to his opening bowlers with Rasheed (15-1-40-3) claiming a wicket from his final ball. Sadly it was too late for the Cavaliers, with Eye reaching their target of 158 after 40.4 overs for the loss of 7 wickets.

Cavs Struggle in Sunny Stebbing

The Sunday XI travelled to Stebbing today to begin their 2018 campaign.

With various players arriving late and the captain not having a full compliment of players at the ground, skipper N Jalib was more than happy to win the toss and bat first. The Cavaliers lost opener R Akhlaq (0) early on, but fellow opener M Nadeem and captain N Jalib got the score board ticking over before Jalib (12) was dismissed with the score on 33/2. Nadeem then combined with Cavs debutant F Munir in a third wicket partnership of 67 in 12 overs, with both batsmen hitting fours and sixes galore before the Stebbing spinners put a squeeze on the scoring rate. With the score 100/2 after 19 overs, the Cavs saw Nadeem (46) and B Prabhu (2) dismissed in quick succession before re-building to 126/4 through Munir and R Rasheed. The dreaded "Cavaliers Collapse" struck for the second time this weekend though, with Rasheed (8), Munir (40), D Young (0) and N Davidson (0) all dismissed in the space of two overs as the score slipped from 126/4 to 127/8; four wickets for just one run! With just the tail left, the Stebbing bowlers made short work of V Gedi (2) and A Ali (4 on debut) as the Cavaliers were all out for 139 in 38 overs, with C Finch unbeaten on 2*.

The Stebbing chase saw their openers add 26 in the face of some excellent bowling from opening bowlers R Rasheed and N Davidson, with Rasheed producing some excellent swing with the old ball. First to strike was Davidson (4-1-22-1), but it was Rasheed (7-2-32-2) who then took two wickets in two balls, including an early contender for wicket-taking delivery of 2018! - The Cavs claiming three wickets in four balls as Stebbing slipped to 30/3. Jalib then shuffled his change bowlers, but seamers F Munir (5-0-24-0), B Prabhu (3-0-19-0) and V Gedi (2-0-12-0) were unable to build upon the work of the openers. With the spin of C Finch (1-0-14-0) not providing a breakthrough, Jalib turned to debutant A Ali (0.4-0-5-1) who broke the fourth wicket partnership of 109 via a comidic stumping by D Young (two attempts in slow motion). With the scores level at 139/4, it was almost over; Stebbing running out 6 wicket winners after 22.4 overs.

Gedi Prevents Sudbury's Revenge of the Fifth

After last week's rained off game, the Cavaliers travelled to Lavenham to play Sudbury III in a bid to maintain their unbeaten start to 2018 (albeit without playing!).

Having lost the toss the Cavaliers were put into bat, with captain D Dellar an M Vinter finding free scoring a problem on a slow pitch. A great effort from the pair saw them add 71 runs for the first wicket in 21.3 overs before Dellar (35) was the first wicket to fall. Vinter (30) fell three overs later, and K Chowdhury (13) two overs after that. A fourth wicket partnership of 26 between P Kannan and P Johnson saw the Cavaliers reach 120/3, but the curse of the "Cavaliers collapse" saw Johnson (6), N Hussain (0) and Kannan (20) fall as the score slipped to 120/6! With N Davidson (5) out soon afterwards, debutant V Gedi (playing his first ever game of hard ball cricket) and D Young added 15 together before Young (4) was bowled off his pads, with S Riaz (2) fell soon after too. A big six from last man U Ghani saw the Cavaliers pass 150, but Ghani (6) fell without adding more runs to his tally as the Cavaliers ended their innings 153 all out off 40.3 overs, with Gedi unbeaten on 11* in a fine first showing for the club.

The Cavaliers bowling effort began with boundaries, no balls and wides, but the opening pair of N Davidson (5-1-20-0) and S Riaz soon settled into a rhythm as the Sudbury opening pair added 38 in the first ten overs before Riaz (8-0-28-2) found enough movement to dismiss both openers. With breakthroughs made Dellar turned to his spinners U Ghani and N Hussain.  Both started economically with a few near misses but it was Hussain who made the next breakthroughs, including wicket of the well set #3 batsmen, as he bamboozled the opposition; at one stage bowling 47 balls for just 1 run and taking two wickets in that time! Ghani (11-1-27-1) claimed a deserved wicket via a diving Davidson catch before being replaced by Gedi with Sudbury 88/6 after 31 overs. Gedi continued the economical work of the spinners, claiming a caught and bowled chance for a wicket on debut to go with his not out and fine fielding display. A couple of overs later, Hussain (14-7-14-4) took the prized wicket of Hinchcliffe (stumped Young) before Gedi (7.3-1-12-2) finished the innings with another caught and bowled - Sudbury all out for 107 as the Cavaliers claimed a full 20pts with a 46 run win.

Change of Sponsor and New Kit

Over the winter we have negotiated a new sponsorship deal for the club with Pickering, a manufacturer of electronic relays. We are in the process of updating signage, documentation and the website to replace the PBUK logos with new shiny Pickering logos... We are also changing the name of our midweek XI to 'Pickering Cavaliers'!

More importantly this means that our playing shirts are now outdated. As members of the Cavaliers, we expect you guys to help support the club and the new sponsor by buying a new playing shirt with a Pickering logo on it. We realise that asking you to pay full price is a bit hard on everyone, so we have asked our kit supplier to set up a voucher code on our kit website. Simply go to the online club kit store at http://www.cavaliers-cc.org.uk/clubShop.html, and add a playing shirt to your basket (and any other kit you like the look of - Serious Sport have updated their lines and also sell sunhats now). On the checkout screen type the code CavaliersCC15into the Promo Code box and a £15 discount will be applied, reducing the shirt cost from £24.99 (price without adding initials) to just £9.99. One voucher can be applied per order and is only redeemable if you are purchasinga playing shirt. If the voucher code does not work at this point, do not proceed - Give me an email and I'll find out what the problem is (the code won't be possible to add after you complete the checkout process).

Peter Rawlings

It is with great sadness that we were informed that Peter Rawlings passed away. He passed peacefully after a short spell in hospital. Pete was club Vice President, an avid supporter of the club, and a club legend. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.
