Collapses Cost the Cavs

The Saturday XI travelled to Clay Hall Farm today to play Ipswich 3rds.

After winning the toss D Dellar elected to bowl first. The Cavaliers opening bowling pair of R Rasheed (12-2-28-0) and P Kalra (7-1-19-0) bowled excellent spells without reward, keeping the Ipswich opening pair under 2-runs-an-over for mot of the opening exchanges. The breakthough was eventually made by S Riaz (7-1-13-1) with the score on 53. A second wicket partnership of 57 then saw Ipswich pass 100, but U Ghani (12-0-82-1) claimed the next wicket to fall. With N Hussain (7-2-33-1) taking another wicket and N Davidson effecting a direct-hit run out, Ipswich were 130/4, but some big shots saw them post 181/4 from their 45 overs.

The Cavaliers chase of 182 started well, with openers D Dellar and N Hussain adding 57 runs together in 16 overs before Hussain was caught behind for 35. From 57/0, the Cavaliers suffered a collapse that ripped the heart out of their chase attempt, with R Akhlaq (0), P Kannan (0), and N Davidson (0) all out for ducks as the scoreline slipped to 60/4. A fifth wicket partnership of 22 between Dellar and P Johnson (6) helped the Cavaliers recover before R Rasheed helped Dellar get the Cavaliers up to 97/5. With Rasheed (13) and P Kalra (0) falling in quick succession, the Cavs were 99/7. Dellar and D Young then saw the Cavaliers up to 110 but the end of the innings was near, as Young (1), Dellar (35) and S Riaz (6) were all out with the Cavaliers only managing 117 all out in 38.3 overs, losing by 64 runs.

Cavs Make a Late Charge for Victory

The Cavaliers welcomed Ipswich & East Suffolk to Mill Road today in the last home game of the 2017 season.

After losing the toss the Cavaliers were asked to bat first on a green pitch and lost an early wicket, that of D Dellar (2), in the first over. M Vinter and D Smith then combined to build the highest second wicket partnership of the 2017 season for the Cavaliers, adding 135 runs together in 25 overs as Smith reached his fifty in 66 balls, followed by Vinter's fifty in 76 balls. Vinter (54) was the first to go before Smith and P Kannan saw the Cavaliers up to 159/2, but both Smith (74) and Kannan (20) fell in quick succession as the score slipped to 165/4. With R Rasheed (13) out soon afterwards, A Sarwar (in his last match for the Cavaliers) and N Hussain added a quickfire 50 for the sixth wicket in 5.5 overs, getting the Cavaliers up to 233/5 before Sarwar was out for a 26-ball 44. P Johnson (1) was next to go (in the penultimate over), but N Hussain (21*) saw the Cavs up to their final score of 241/7 in 45 overs, with D Young (0*) the other not out batsman.

The IESCC openers added 37 for the first wicket in their reply before R Rasheed (7-1-24-1) made the breakthrough while A Sarwar (7-1-32-0) was unlucky to go wicketless. The Cavaliers then continued to chip away with wickets, with N Hussain (7-0-48-1) and P Kalra (8-3-29-2) taking the next three to fall while IESCC captain M Sproats went big at the other end. As the opposition reached 172/4 with more than 10 overs remaining, S Riaz (5-0-26-1) then took the crucial wicket of Sproats (77) which triggered a late charge for the Cavs - D Young effecting a direct-hit run out running around to gully before D Smith (6-1-30-2) took the next wickets to fall as IESCC slumped to 192/8. The introduction of P Kannan (1-0-5-2) then saw the match end quickly as he Cavaliers dismissed Ipswich & East Suffolk for 197 in 41 overs, winning by 44 runs.

Will (Wilton-)Steers Kelvedon to Victory

The Sunday XI welcomed Kelvedon & Feering to Mill Road for their last home game of the 2017 NECL season.

Having lost the toss the Cavs were invited to field first and the Kelvedon openers added 81 together with R Rasheed (5-1-42-0) and N Davidson (first spell of 7-0-47-0) unable to take an early wicket. B Prabhu (9-1-52-1) then made the first breakthrough but the Kelvedon second wicket pairing continued to attack the Cavaliers bowling attack, reaching 141/1 after just 16 overs, with an imposing score of 350+ looking possible! With Prabhu and M Nadeem (9-0-56-0) helping to reduce the run rate, Kelvedon reached 211/1 in 27.5 overs before S Riaz struck in his fourth over, taking 4-8 in 14 balls, ending with figures of 9-0-54-4 (and having a close LBW shout turned down in his last over for a maiden 5-fer). With Nadeem also effecting a direct-hit run out, Kelvedon 249/6 after 38 overs. A good last over burst from N Davidson (8-0-57-2) saw two more wickets fall, and Kelvedon ended their 40 overs on 267/8 - Quite a recovery from the Cavaliers bowlers and fielders!

The Cavaliers reply saw R Akhlaq and debutant I Nasir add 23 for the first wicket before Akhlaq (13) was caught out. A second wicket partnership of 41 got the Cavs up to 64, but a wobble saw R Rasheed (16), M Nadeem (0) and N Jalib (9) all dimised cheaply as the score slipped to 74/4. With I Nasir (33) out soon afterwards the Cavaliers were in danger of not passing 100, but the next wicket didn't fall until the score had reached 96 - A Rasheed (7) the man to go. Some lusty blows from B Prabhu kept the scoreboard ticking along as the score reached 112/6, but wickets fell quickly from that point onwards, with S Riaz (0), N Davidson (4), Prabhu (30) and C Finch (0) all dismissed as the Cavaliers were 118 all out in 22 overs (D Young the unbeaten batsman on 1*), losing by 149 runs - W Wilton-Steer causing most of the damage with 5-24 from 5 overs.

Cavs Fall to Frinton

The Saturday XI travelled to Kirby today to play Frinton.

Having won the toss D Dellar elected to field first in a 35 over a side game, reduced due to expected rain delays. The expected rain caused two stoppages and brought an early tea, with the Frinton openers adding 137 together in a partnerhip where every aerial shot and edge found gaps in the field, was misjudged, or just evaded fielders as opening bowlers R Rasheed and P Kalra (6-0-34-0) were unable to make the breakthrough. The first wicket came via a stumping for D Young off of U Ghani, and it was followed by regular wickets from Ghani (11-0-54-4) and S Riaz (8-0-50-3) as Frinton slipped to 182/7. With the returning R Rasheed (11-1-62-2) claiming two late wickets, Frinton ended their 35 overs on 215/9.

With the sun shining for the second innings, the Cavaliers began their chase by losing S Pillalamarri (2) early on. With E Parry timing the ball well and N Jalib rotating the strike at will, the Cavaliers appeared to be getting a foothold in the match, but Parry (14) was out in the ninth over. The score reched 38/2 before the wickets of N Jalib (9), R Akhlaq (11) and R Rasheed (1) saw the Cavs slip to 45/5. A sixth wicket partnership of 36 between D Dellar and P Kalra saw the Cavaliers pick up their first batting point of the day before Dellar (26) was bowled. D Young (2) followed soon afterwards, but Kalra and P Johnson saw the Cavaliers pass 100, though Johnson (4) was dismissed three balls later. An unbeaten ninth wicket partnership between Kalra (30*)  and S Riaz (4*) got the Cavaliers up to their final total of 118/8 in 35 overs, losing by 97 runs.
