Club Record Chase Seals Victory

The Saturday XI travelled to Copford today, and fielded first upon winning the toss.

The Cavaliers opening bowlers started well, with R Rasheed (opening spell of 8-1-21-0) and N Davidson (5-0-32-0) unlucky to not pick up wickets, as catchable chances went into gaps, just over fielders, or inside edges just evaded the stumps. With U Ghani and S Riaz (3-0-15-0) also unable to make a breakthrough, the Copford openers added 92 runs for the first wicket before T Janganan held on to a juggling catch off of the bowling of Ghani (15-1-74-1). Copford then added a further 93 for the second wicket as Ghani & D Smith (7-0-58-0) were unable to make further inroads, with Copford opener S Samaranayake scoring 101 before the returning R Rasheed (13-1-59-1) bowled him out. Some fine death bowling from Rasheed and P Kannan (2-0-22-0) then meant Copford idn't get too many from the final few overs, though a third wicket partnership of 82* saw Copford up to a final impoing total of 267/2 from their 45 overs, with P Geddis 91* at the end.

The Cavaliers reply then saw T Janganan (8) caught out early (in the fifth over) with the score on 13. With D Dellar (13) out four overs later, the Cavs were in need of a good partnership to steady the chase. That came via a 67 run partnership for the second wicket, with F Murtaza reaching a 29-ball fifty while D Smith played himself in. With Murtaza (58 from 38 balls) out, the scoreboard showed 108/3 as P Kannan joined D Smith in the middle. Both batsmen then played an impressive innings, taking the singles on offer and putting the bad balls away for boundaries, as they added an exceptional 144 runs for the fouth wicket (just 4 runs off of equalling the club record for the fourth wicket, set back in 1996!), with Smith reaching his fifty in 63 balls, and Kannan reaching his maiden Cavaliers fifty in 64 balls. By the end of their 25.5 over partnership, the pair had seen the Cavs up to 252/4, with Smith (83 from 96 balls) caught at long-off attempting a big hit to reduce the required rate. With 16 required from 10 balls, R Rasheed entered the fray, hitting his second ball for a straight six that put a hole in the home side's sightscreen! With the equation down to 7 needed from the last over, Kannan hit the first ball for a single, Rasheed hit a four (top-edged over the 'keeper), but a wicket came from the third ball - Rasheed out for a 4-ball 11. The new batsman, N Davidson (1*) ran a chaotic single off his only ball faced, leaving Kannan (79*) to hit a lofted four to take the Cavaliers to 271/5 from 44.5 overs to record a club record run chase*!

*Run chase records date back to 2005, but Roy Paris wasn't aware of a higher chase before that...

Cavs Score Big

The Saturday XI hosted Elevden yesterday in the Two Counties Championship.

The visitors won the toss and elected to field with just nine players, having struggled to get a full XI to travel. A good opening partnership of 52 in 9.4 overs between JJ Elliston and F Murtaza got the Cavaliers off to a fine start before Elliston (14) was bowled. An attacking second wicket partnership between Murtaza and K Chowdhury added a further 118 runs, taking the Cavs up to 170/1, with Murtaza bringing up another 50 for the club in just 46 balls before being caught out for 92. Soon after Murtaza's dismissal, Chowdhury (52) passed his fifty before falling with the score on 200 after 30 overs. With the fourth wicket adding 31 runs, the dismissal of T Janganan (34) led to more wickets, with D Young (14) and J Parks (0) out soon afterwards, but a good seventh wicket partnership of 46 between P Kannan and P Johnson saw the Cavaliers up to 285 before Kannan (26) and P Kalra (0) were both dismissed towards the end. The Cavs ended their innings of 289/8 from their 45 overs, with Johnson (24*) and S Riaz (0*) there at the end.

Elveden started their reply well as the openers added 74 together before P Kalra made the initial breakthrough. With the visitors reaching 110/1 despite the best efforts of U Ghani (15-2-54-0), Kalra (13-0-69-2) took his second wicket. With P Kannan (7-0-23-1) taking the third wicket of the innings to reduce the visitors to 145/3, the Cavaliers continued to take regular wickets, with S Riaz taking two more to take the score to 150/5. Elveden then reached the final over with the score on 173/5, with the Cavaliers needing three wickets to claim full points from the fixture - Riaz (10-0-28-4) proceeded to take wickets with the fourth and fifth deliveries of the over, but was unfortunately not able to claim a hat-trick for the full points as Elveden's last man saw off the final delivery of the match, reaching 174/7 from their 45 overs - The Cavaliers winning by 115 runs.

Cavs Run Galleywood Close

The Cavaliers welcomed Galleywood to Mill Road today in their NECL fixture.

Galleywood won the toss and elected to bat first, adding 35 for the first wicket before P Kannan made the first breakthrough of the day. With the Cavaliers openers N Davidson (8-2-36-0) and P Kannan (9-2-48-1) unable to make further inroads into the Galleywood batting line-up, captain N Jalib tried spells from T Janganan (1-0-19-0) and C Finch (3-0-23-0) before turning to the spin of K Chowdhury (8-0-44-0) and N Hussain (9-2-26-2), who took two quick wickets as Galleywood went from 134/1 to 140/3. A fourth wicket partnership of 81 then saw off the remainder of Chowdhury and Hussain's spells, a spell from J Samwell (2-0-21-0), plus some remaining overs from Davison and Kannan as the opposition ended on 221/3 from their 40 overs.

Facing a difficult target the Cavaliers opening batsmen, M Vinter and K Chowdhury, added 68 for the first wicket before Vinter (25) was bowled. With K Chowdhury (42) departing soon afterwards the Cavs were 81/2, but an attacking third wicket partnership of 65 between N Jalib and T Janganan took the score to 146/2, with Jalib (22) caught out shortly before Janganan brought up his second Cavaliers fifty from just 45 balls. A further 30 runs were added by Janganan and P Kannan to put the Cavs in a good position of 176/3, but Kannan (14) and Janganan (61) both fell in quick succession as the score slipped to 179/5. The Cavs rebuilt through N Hussain and N Davidson (10) before D Young joined Hussain as the Cavaliers passed 200, needing 22 from the last 11 balls. With boundaries hard to find, the equation came down to 15 needed from the last over - The Cavaliers could only manage 6 of the needed runs, with Young (4) dismissed LBW with 4 balls left, as they finished on 213/7 with N Hussain (17*) and C Finch (2*) the undefeated batsmen as the Cavs lost by 8 runs.

Cavs Recover to Clinch Victory

The Cavaliers hosted Copdock & OI III at Mill Road today in the Two Counties Championship.

After winning the toss, stand-in skipper D Smith elected to bat first in sunny conditions. With JJ Elliston (5) and D Smith (8) departing early, the Cavaliers made steady progress, passing 50 before F Murtata (33) was caught behind with the score on 59/3. A collapse of Cavaliers proportions then saw the P Johnson (4), J Parks (5), A Sarwar (1) and P Kalra (6) all dismissed as the score slipped to 80/7, with some doubts about whether a competitive total would be posted by the home team. A 30 run partnership between D Young and R Rasheed helped to steady the nerves as the Cavs passed 100, but with Young bowled for 18, Rasheed took the attack to the Copdock bowlers, raising the total to 147/8 before Rasheed (49 from 51 balls) was bowled out agonisingly close to a maiden fifty. Some lusty blows from S Riaz (17*) helped the cavaliers up to their final total of 159 all out from 40.2 overs, with U Ghani (1) the last man out.

The Copdock openers got off to a good start, scoring 18 from the first 3 overs, but an excellent comeback from the cavaliers opening pair of R Rasheed (8-1-33-3) and P Kalra (8-4-18-1) saw the opposition add just 10 runs in the next 8 overs. A fifth wicket partnership of 60 saw Copdock recover to 88/4, with U Ghani and A Sarwar (3-0-15-0) unable to make the breakthough initially, though Ghani eventually bowled the Copdock #6 during his first spell of 7-1-28-1.With S Riaz (4-0-17-1) claiming a wicket of his own, Copdock were 90/6, but a seventh wicket partnership of 24 saw the visitors reach 114/6 before D Smith (2-0-2-1) and U Ghani (8.2-1-29-3) finished off the innings quickly - U Ghani taking two wickets off the final two balls, including the crucial wicket of ex-Cav D Skinner (47) as Copdock were all out for 114. The Cavaliers fighting back well for a 45 run win.

Kaiser Caps Cavs Win

The Saturday XI hosted Ipswich today in the Two Counties Championship.

After stand-in captain M Vinter won the toss, the Cavaliers elected to field. Opening bowlers A Sarwar (7-2-10-0) and P Kalra (0/26 from his first 7 overs) bowled very well at the start of the innings, but the Ipswich opening batsmen added 60 in the first 21.3 overs before S Riaz (8-2-19-2) made breakthroughs in his fourth and fifth overs to reduce the visitors to 61/2. With U Ghani (2/7 from his first 8 overs) also taking two quick wickets, Ipswich were 66/4 after 29 overs. With Ipswich attacking C Finch (3-0-36-0) took some tap, but T Hijazi (5-0-16-1) broke the fifth wicket partnership, worth 58. The returning P Kalra (11-1-37-0) and U Ghani then bowled excellently at the death, with Ghani (11-4-23-3) claiming a wicket from the last ball of the innings as Ipswich scored 150/6 from their 45 overs.

The Cavaliers reply saw J Walton (10) bowled early on, but the second wicket partnership between M Vinter and K Chowdhury steadied the innings before Vinter (17) was also bowled, leaving the score on 43/2, with N Jalib joining Chowdhury at the wicket. Some fine batting from both players saw the Cavs pass 100 in the 26th over, and Chowdhury earned his Cavaliers cap, scoring his first fifty for the club in 75 balls. Jalib reached his fifty soon afterwards (from 47 balls), and an unbeaten partnership of 110 between Chowdhury (63*) and Jalib (55*) for the third wicket saw the Cavs reach 153/2 after 31.4 overs, winning by 8 wickets.
