The Sunday XI welcomed West Bergholt to Mill Road today in the first Cavaliers home fixture of the season.
Winning the toss, captain C Finch elected to bat first, but the early wickets of N Jalib (5) and E Parry (0) left the Cavaliers 6/2 after 7.1 overs. A small recovery saw the score improve to 28/2, but D Young (2) became the third wicket to fall, bringing N Davidson to the crease to join debutant T Janganan in the middle. With both batsmen taking the attack to the West Bergholt change bowlers the Cavs found themselves 59/3 after 16 overs, but both Janganan (28 from 28 balls) and Davidson (22 from 21 balls) fell to reduce the Cavaliers to 64/5. P Johnson then helped to keep the Cavs on track, combining in partnerships with K Jayasinghe (7) and J Samwell to bring up the 100 for the home side, but the wicket of Johnson for a hard-fought 10 from 50 balls triggered a collapse as Samwell (16), C Finch (0) and N Hussain (13) were all dismissed - The Cavaliers losing their last four wickets for just 14 runs as the innings closed on 117 after 38.3 overs, with T Mayhew (1*) adding another 'not out' to his collection.
The West Bergholt reply got off to a solid start as their openers added 25 runs in 6.2 overs with both opening bowlers, N Davidson and N Hussain (an opening spell of 7-4-9-0), keeping things tight before Davidson took three wickets in eight balls (including two in two!) on his way to figures of 9-1-32-3. It then fell to J Samwell (5-2-12-1) to continue the good work of the openers, and he began with a maiden and a wicket maiden, while T Mayhew (6-0-28-1) bowled with control at the other end. With Bergholt approaching their target, C Finch (1-0-13-0) brought himself on before turning back to his opening bowlers, but neither Davidson or Hussain (9-4-21-0) could prevent the loss - West Bergholt finishing on 120/5 after 30 overs, winning by 5 wickets.
