Sunday XI Edge a Thriller

The Sunday XI travelled to Kelvedon & Feering today for their first game of the 2017 NECL campaign.

With roadworks closing the A12, getting all eleven players to Kelvedon on time turned out to be a difficult task, so the captains agreed on a 35 overs per side game with play getting underway at 1:45pm. Skipper N Jalib won the toss and elected to bat - A sensible decision with half of his team spread over North Essex in various traffic jams!! Kelvedon struck early, dismissing E Parry (1), but the second wicket partnership of N Jalib and M Vinter added an impressive 107 runs before Jalib was bowled for 73 (from just 58 balls), his top score for the Cavaliers. What followed was a typical "Cavs Collapse", as Vinter could only watch from the other end as U Ghani, P Kannan and J Patel all fell for ducks - The Cavaliers going from 122/1 to 128/5. A sixth wicket partnership of 24 between Vinter and J Samwell saw Vinter to his half-century, but regular breakthroughs for the home side saw Samwell (6), D Young (0) and H Tuckwell (0) all depart. With Vinter eventually dismissed for an excellent 69 the Cavs were 165/9, but the last pair of C Finch (6*) and T Mayhew (3) added an extra 14 runs together to see the Cavaliers up to a competitive 179 all out from 34.4 overs.

Refuelled by lasagne and a fine selection of cakes, the Cavaliers made an early breakthrough thanks to a fine catch by J Samwell off of the bowling of J Patel (2-0-10-1) before Patel had to leave the field due to a back injury. With debutant P Kannan bowling well from the other end, Jalib turned to U Ghani to keep the runs down before replacing Kannan with T Mayhew, who deceived he Kelvedon opener, Warner, to break a 76 run stand for the second wicket - D Young completing a stumping. With Ghani (8-0-28-0) keeping the run rate down (and being very unlucky to not take a wicket), Mayhew picked up three more wickets, including that of the dangerous E King (63, caught Young) on his way to figures of 8-0-44-4. Jalib turned to J Samwell (2-0-17-0) next, before the returning P Kannan picked up his first two wickets for the Cavaliers, ending with figures of 8-0-40-2 in a promising debut performance. It was getting tight towards the end, with N Jalib (2-0-14-0) and C Finch bowling the final overs, and it all came down to the last over; Kelvedon needing less than ten runs off the last over with three wickets in hand... First ball of the over Finch bowled Kelvedon skipper J Reed (49) with a turning delivery that clipped the top of off stump, the third ball saw him decieve the #9 in the flight to bowl him also, and the fifth ball saw U Ghani and Finch combine to effect a match-winning run out as Finch ended with figures of 4.5-1-15-2 and Kelvedon were all out for 173 - The Cavaliers winning by 6 runs! Phew!

A Winning Start

The Cavaliers Saturday XI travelled to Chantry Park to play Ipswich & East Suffolk in their first game of the 2017 Two Counties campaign.

Having lost the toss the Cavaliers were invited to field first, opening the bowling with R Rasheed and N Davidson (5-0-21-0). With the IESCC openers adding 41 runs, captain D Dellar turned to S Riaz, who struck with the last ball of his first over for the club, with D Young taking the catch. The bowling partnership of Riaz and P Kalra then proceeded to regularly pick up wickets, as IESCC slumped to 91/8 - Sharp catches behind the wicket by Young, Dellar and N Hussain leading to a fine maiden spell of 7-1-29-3 for Riaz, and a first 5-fer of 2017 for the Cavs by Kalra (9-4-16-5). With wickets falling around him, the IESCC captain M Sproats unleashed an assault on the Cavaliers bowlers, adding 86 runs for the final two wickets (with his partners scoring no runs!!) - U Ghani (2-0-25-0) was particularly unlucky, while the returning R Rasheed (8-3-55-1) took some tap despite taking the ninth wicket to fall. With N Hussain (2.1-0-26-1) taking the final wicket after some treatment from Sproats, IESCC finished on 177 all out from 33.1 overs - M Sproats finishing 116 not out, and the innings including SEVEN ducks!

The Cavaliers reply got off to an excellent start, with D Dellar and N Hussain batting solidly whilst putting away bad balls on their way to an opening partnership of 105 in 28.3 overs - Dellar reaching his fifty in 77 balls before falling for 54. With the wickets of F Murtaza (0), D Young (1) and P Johnson (3) falling to the bowling of M Sproats (2/34) and P Church (2/42), the Cavs had slipped to 114/4 and were in danger of letting their promising position in the game slip away. A counter-attacking innings of 24 from 30 balls from R Rasheed helped add 42 runs for the fifth wicket, with Hussain reaching his fifty in 108 balls as the Cavaliers reached 156/5. With Hussain scoring enough runs to get the score up to 167, U Ghani (12*) hit three boundaries in succession to see the Cavs (179/5) to a five wicket win in 48 overs, with Hussain carrying his bat for an unbeaten 64.
