Cavs Run Dunmow Close

The Cavaliers hosted Dunmow at Mill Road today in a top of the table clash in the Two Counties Championship.

With stand-in captain D Young winning the toss the Cavaliers fielded first, with opening bowlers R Rasheed (8-0-34-0) and M Nadeem (5-1-33-0) bowling well, but unlucky to see several dropped catches off their bowling. First change bowler U Ghani eventually made the breakthrough, bowling one opener before having the Dunmow #3 caught behind by Young. With Ghani bowling well at one end, N Hussain claimed two wickets in one over (both caught behind by Young) before claiming regular wickets in the Dunmow middle order. After a fine spell from Ghani (13-2-54-2), J Samwell (1-0-11-0) and P Singh (1-0-6-2) had short spells before Hussain (12.1-4-33-6) claimed the final wicket (a fourth catch for Young) as Dunmow were all out for 184 in 40.1 overs.

The Cavs reply saw P Singh (0) out early, but a hard hitting innings from M Nadeem gave the innings some momentum as he and N Jalib got the score to 46/1 before it slipped to 61/5 as Nadeem (29), R Akhlaq (3), N Jalib (22) and T Hijazi (0) were all dismissed. A sixth wicket partnership of 36 between N Hussain and R Rasheed got the Cavaliers up to 97 before Rasheed (20) was caught. With the game in the balance, Hussain and Young combined in a seventh wicket partnership of 54, reducing the target to 33 required off 18 overs, before Young (22) top-edged a pull to the Dunmow keeper to make the score 151/7. With U Ghani (2), C Finch (0) and J Samwell (0) all dismissed cheaply, Hussain was left standed on 46* as the Cavaliers ended all out for 156 all out in 33 overs, losing by 28 runs.

The Cavaliers end the season as Division 9 South runners-up, with Dunmow claiming the title.

Day of the Nomans

The Saturday XI played Eight Ash Green at Mill Road yesterday.

The Cavaliers won the toss and elected to field first on a green tinged wicket, with JJ Elliston (6-1-36-1) claiming an early wicket while K Hemstedt (6-1-28-0) toiled at the other end. With the Green's second wicket partnership adding 62 runs while riding their luck, skipper D Dellar turned to his spinners, with N Hussain breaking the partnership to leave EAG 73/2. With Hussain and T Hijazi (6-2-12-0) keeping the run rate down, a run out by Hussain/D Young accounted for the next wicket. With Hussain continuing to take wickets, J Samwell (3-0-18-0) replaced Hijazi at the other end, but the 10-man Eight Ash Green team had no answer to a rampant Hussain, who finished with excellent figures of 9-2-32-7 as they were dismissed for 118 in 30 overs.

The Cavaliers, chasing 119 in 60 overs, got off to a solid start in their run chase reaching 47 before D Dellar (19) was trapped LBW. With M Vinter (35*) going well at the other end, Cavs #3 N Jalib unfurled his range of scoring shots in an unbeaten stand of 73 for the second wicket, with Jalib (50*) hitting a four to win the match and bring up his fifty (from just 27 balls) as the Cavs scored 120/1 in 21.5 overs in a comprehensive 9 wicket victory.

Hussain Heroics in Vain

The Sunday XI welcomed Abberton to Mill Road today.

Having lost the toss, the Cavaliers fielded first with M Nadeem (5-0-34-0) and N Davidson (6-1-27-0) opening the bowling. The introduction of N Hussain and U Ghani (9-1-31-0) helped to reduce the run-rate, with D Young claiming two stumpings as Hussain finished with excellent figures of 9-4-14-3. With D Smith (4-0-26-1) taking the fourth wicket to fall (caught by Young via a parry by slip), it was left to T Mayhew (5-0-55-0) and C Finch (2-0-11-0) to finish off the innings as Abberton posted 207/4 off their 40 overs with opening batsman M Sullivan scoring 141*.

The Cavaliers reply saw opening batsman D Young (4) dismissed in the second over before the score progressed to 30/1. The dismissals of A Corcos (11), D Smith (15) and M Nadeem (1) saw the score slip to 39/4, but a superb fifth wicket partnership between E Parry and N Hussain lead to a Cavaliers recovery. The pair added 105 together in 23 overs, with Hussain (54) scoring his maiden fifty in 67 balls before being run out via a direct hit. With J Patel (0) falling soon afterwards, it was left to Parry (42*) and N Davidson (4*) to see the Cavs up to their final total of 155/6, losing by 52 runs.

Unbeaten Record Ended

The Saturday XI played West Mersea yesterday at Mill Road.

The Cavaliers fielded first and took early wickets through K Hemstedt (6-1-24-1) and C Finch (3-0-24-1) before turning to spinners N Hussain and J Samwell (5-1-21-0). The Cavs continued to chip away at the Mersea batting line up as Hussain claimed wickets as well as T Hijazi (7-1-21-1) and J Patel (4-0-9-1). With P Singh (3-0-7-0) and R Ikhlaq (1-0-7-0) bowling short spells, it was left to Hussain (13-4-20-4) to claim the last wicket as West Mersea were all out for 138 in 42 overs.

The Cavaliers reply saw S Pillalamarri (2) dismissed early on before the two quick wickets of P Singh (12) and J Patel (0) saw the Cavs slip to 19/3. A fourth wicket partnership of 20 saw the Cavs steady the innings somewhat, but both R Ikhlaq (12) and P Johnson (8) were dismissed in quick succession as the score reached 45/5 in the fourteenth over. With D Dellar (10), T Hijazi (0) and N Hussain (16) the next three wickets to fall, the Cavaliers were struggling on 73/8 before a double-wicket maiden from S Smith (13-4-35-6) accounted for K Hemstedt (5) and J Samwell (0) as the Cavs were all out for 84 resulting in a 54 run loss, with C Finch (7*) the undefeated batsman.
