Wheeler Wallops Cavs

The Sunday XI hosted West Bergholt today.

Having won the toss, captain D Smith elected to bat first in sunny conditions. He and P Singh batted well against the new ball as the opening pair added 62 for the first wicket before Singh was bowled for 14. A mini-collapse then accounted for M Nadeem (1) and T Hijazi (0) to leave the Cavs 64/3 before Smith and E Parry staged a recovery for the fourth wicket, adding 28 together before Smith was dismissed for 54 (from just 61 balls). The Cavs managed to reach 111/4 before 'Nelson' struck - Three wickets fell in three overs as P Johnson (2), Parry (21) and J Patel (0) were all dismissed on that total as the Cavs slumped to 111/7. D Young then combined with N Davidson (4), C Finch (2) and T Mayhew (0*) to see the Cavs up to 129 all out from 38.3 overs - Young the last man out for 9.

The Cavaliers fielding effort began well, with N Davidson (7-1-19-2) claiming two LBWs (Davidson being the only player to not appeal for the first one!), while M Nadeem (7-1-26-0) bowled well at the other end. West Bergholt then recovered through a third wicket partnership of 67 as the batsmen repelled the best efforts of T Mayhew (3-0-24-0), P Singh (4-0-20-0) and T Hijazi (3-0-16-0) before C Finch (3-0-26-1) broke the stand, dismissing E Hance (28) LBW. With Bergholt approaching their target, Smith gave J Patel (1-0-1-0) a bowl, but the match was ended in the next over as D Wheeler (69*) hit a six over square leg to seal a seven wicket win for the visitors as they finished on 133/3 from 28 overs.
