A Game Of Two Hundreds

The Cavaliers Sunday XI started their season at Kirby today.
Continuing the 2016 trend of losing the toss, the Cavaliers were asked to bat first in overcast conditions. Openers M Vinter and N Jalib started watchfully, adding 29 for the first wicket in 8.3 overs before Jalib (11) became the first wicket to fall for the Cavs this year. With skipper D Smith (8) out LBW shortly after, Vinter joined forces with P Sadler to bring up the first hundred partnership of the season - The pair adding 108 for the third wicket before Sadler (51 from just 46 balls) was caught at cover, with onlooking Cavs sighing in disappointment. Vinter brought up his fifty (from 88 balls) shortly afterwards, but a familiar Cavs collapse saw J Patel (1), J Walton (1), N Hussain (0) and D Young (1) all dismissed cheaply. The arrival of N Davidson then put Kirby on the back foot; a first ball six signalling Davidson's intent! Vinter then brought up the first Cavs century of 2016, reaching the landmark in 122 balls as he and Davidson (28 from 13 balls) added 70 for the 8th wicket. With support from T Mayhew (1*), Vinter carried his bat for 109* (128 balls) as the Cavaliers scored an imposing 265/8 from their 40 overs, with extras contributing a very handy 54 runs.
The Kirby reply got off to a good start as the openers added 98 for the first wicket, with opening bowlers J Walton (9-1-53-0) and N Davidson (5-0-20-0) unable to make a breakthrough. With J Patel (4-0-21-0) also bowling an unsuccessful spell, Smith turned to spinners T Mayhew and N Hussain. The introduction of Hussain (6-3-3-1) brought immediate success as he dismissed Kirby skipper M Oram for a 65-ball 52. With Mayhew (7-0-28-1) dismissing the Kirby #3, it was left to Smith (4-0-28-0) and C Finch (5-1-29-0) to see out the final overs as Kirby ended on 184/2, with young opener K Parkes finishing the innings on 116* as the Cavs won by 81 runs.
