The Saturday XI played Halstead yesterday in the last Two Counties match of the season.
The Cavaliers batted first by agreement, and got off to a good start through openers N Jalib and D Dellar (10) who added 27 for the first wicket. A second wicket partnership between Jalib and F Murtaza saw the Cavs up to 55/1 before our customary collapse saw the wickets of Murtaza (18), A Corcos (2), Z Ahmed (0), Jalib (29), K Hemstedt (4) and P Johnson (2) as the Cavaliers slipped to 70/7. The lower order then played some pleasing shots, with eighth and ninth wicket partnerships of 26 and 35 helping the score up to 131, with A Sarwar (25), N Davidson (17) and P Kalra (18) all impressing. With Kalra the last man out, with D Young 0*, the Cavaliers were 136 all out after 40.1 overs.
The Cavs got poff to a good start in the second innings too, with A Sarwar (8-2-14-1) and P Kalra (6-3-8-0) both bowling tight spells. Halstead then recovered through a second wicket partnership between M Surridge and F Statham, who saw off spells from N Davidson (6-0-20-0), K Hemstedt (3-0-21-0) and six overs of pace from Z Ahmed. In a bid to make something happen (and to compensate for the lack of a spinner), the captain turned to A Corcos (3-0-32-0) and Z Ahmed changed to bowling leg-spin. Thanks to a leg-side catch from D Young, Ahmed claimed the wicket of Statham (32) - That catch took Young to 50 dismissals for 2015, and also drew him level with the club record of 27 in a single league season. The skipper then continued to rotate his attack, with F Murtaza (2-0-5-1) claiming the wicket of Surridge (65) via a sharp catch by A Corcos, but with only 5 needed to win it was too late. The winning runs were hit off N Jalib (0.4-0-4-0), and Halstead had 140/3 in 37.4 overs, meaning they end the season as Champions, and are promoted to Division 7.
