Cavs End on a High

The Sunday XI played the last Cavaliers match of 2015 against Great Braxted & Tiptree today.

Having lost the toss, the Cavaliers were asked to field first on a damp pitch. The GBT openers started well, seeing off spells from J Bardell and N Davidson, with Bardell (9-0-29-0) being particularly unlucky. With the opening batsmen adding 77 for the first wicket (in 19.5 overs), it took a great catch by D Smith off the bowling of N Hussain to dismiss the dangerous S Hummerstone (40). With Hussain then running out the other opener, A Cookson (39), via a direct hit the Cavaliers began to take regular wickets as D Smith (9-0-36-1) and N Hussain (9-3-23-2) struck. With GBT 134/4 after 35 overs, the Cavs took 5-8 in the last 5 overs as the returning N Davidson (8-0-33-1), P Trivedi (3-1-11-2) and T Mayhew (2-1-9-1) claimed wickets - The fifth wicket coming via a run-out by P Johnson/D Young. GBT finished their 40 overs with 142/9 - With the last two overs of the innings being maidens!

The Cavaliers reply got off to a solid start as openers E Parry and S Pillalamarri added 44 for the first wicket with all the GBT bowlers opting to bowl spin. With Pillalamarri (29) out via a good catch by R Hill, D Smith joined Parry in the middle and scored a quick-fire 20 before being bowled by one of GBT's youngsters. Another wicket followed soon after with P Sadler (10) out via a top edge, but a fourth wicket stand of 35 between Parry and P Trivedi steadied any nerves amongst the Cavaliers. A double-wicket maiden then saw the Cavs slip from 118/3 to 118/5 as Trivedi (21) and J Bardell (0) were both dismissed, but an unbeaten partnership of 26 between Parry (35*) and N Hussain (18*) saw the Cavs win by 5 wickets, scoring 144/5 in 33.1 overs.

Halstead Claim League Title

The Saturday XI played Halstead yesterday in the last Two Counties match of the season.

The Cavaliers batted first by agreement, and got off to a good start through openers N Jalib and D Dellar (10) who added 27 for the first wicket. A second wicket partnership between Jalib and F Murtaza saw the Cavs up to 55/1 before our customary collapse saw the wickets of Murtaza (18), A Corcos (2), Z Ahmed (0), Jalib (29), K Hemstedt (4) and P Johnson (2) as the Cavaliers slipped to 70/7. The lower order then played some pleasing shots, with eighth and ninth wicket partnerships of 26 and 35 helping the score up to 131, with A Sarwar (25), N Davidson (17) and P Kalra (18) all impressing. With Kalra the last man out, with D Young 0*, the Cavaliers were 136 all out after 40.1 overs.

The Cavs got poff to a good start in the second innings too, with A Sarwar (8-2-14-1) and P Kalra (6-3-8-0) both bowling tight spells. Halstead then recovered through a second wicket partnership between M Surridge and F Statham, who saw off spells from N Davidson (6-0-20-0), K Hemstedt (3-0-21-0) and six overs of pace from Z Ahmed. In a bid to make something happen (and to compensate for the lack of a spinner), the captain turned to A Corcos (3-0-32-0) and Z Ahmed changed to bowling leg-spin. Thanks to a leg-side catch from D Young, Ahmed claimed the wicket of Statham (32) - That catch took Young to 50 dismissals for 2015, and also drew him level with the club record of 27 in a single league season. The skipper then continued to rotate his attack, with F Murtaza (2-0-5-1) claiming the wicket of Surridge (65) via a sharp catch by A Corcos, but with only 5 needed to win it was too late. The winning runs were hit off N Jalib (0.4-0-4-0), and Halstead had 140/3 in 37.4 overs, meaning they end the season as Champions, and are promoted to Division 7.

Noman Breaks Record

The Cavaliers Sunday XI travelled to Harwich & Dovercourt today.

Having lost the toss the Cavs were asked to bat first, and openers D Smith and N Jalib added 29 for the first wicket in 10 overs before Jalib (8) was trapped LBW. With Smith (12) dismissed in the next over, it fell to P Trivedi and P Sadler to steady the innings with a third wicket partnership of 47 to get the Cavs up to 80/2 before Trivedi (20) was out. The Cavaliers then slipped to 98/5 with E Parry (1) and Sadler (29) both bowled, but an attacking sixth wicket stand of 31 between P Kalra (14) and N Hussain, followed by Hussain adding 27 more with N Davidson (13) saw the Cavs pass 150 before Davidson was out with one over of the innings remaining. It was then left to Hussain (22*) and D Young (5*) to see the Cavaliers up to their final total of 166/7 from their 40 overs.

The Harwich reply started well as their openers saw off spells from N Davidson (3-0-27-0), P Kalra (7-1-38-0) and D Smith (4-0-26-0) on their way to adding 108 for the first wicket. With N Hussain also taking some punishment he eventually had the last laugh, dismissing Abbas for 47 - That wicket taking Hussain past 61 wickets for the year, a new club record! With Hussain continuing as T Mayhew (4-0-23-0) bowled at the other end, the Cavs earned a second wicket through Hussain (8-1-44-2), but an unbeaten third wicket partnership of 41 between Raza (70*) and Barwood (32*) saw the Div 3 champions reach their target after 26.3 overs, with the winning runs coming off the bowling of C Finch (0.3-0-8-0) to condemn the Cavaliers to an eight wicket loss.

Dellar & Hemstedt Milestones Lead To Big Win

The Cavaliers Saturday XI travelled to West Mersea today.

Having won the toss the Cavaliers elected to bat first, with openers D Dellar and S Pillalamarri giving the team an excellent start as the Cavs eased to 97/0 at the drinks break (22 overs). The opening pair then accelerated as they added 201 for the first wicket (the highest stand of 2015 for any wicket) before the captain, S Pillalamarri, was caught for 81 (from 88 balls) in the 36th over. With M Vinter middling the ball straight away, the score kept rising as Dellar reached his maiden Cavaliers century from 136 balls (13x4, 0x6). The innings ended with Vinter (39 from 33 balls) caught in the deep off the last ball as the Cavaliers posted 275/2 from their 45 overs, with Dellar unbeaten on 116* - The second wicket pair adding a quick 74! A special mention should also go to F Murtaza who had to endure being padded up for the entire 45 overs #padrash

The Cavs defence of their total started well as N Davidson struck in the first over, while P Kalra kept things tight at the other end. The opening bowlers continued to bowl with pace and swing to remove the West Mersea top order, with Davidson (7-0-32-3) and Kalra (7-1-30-2) both returning good final figures. The introduction of K Hemstedt then had Mersea rattled as he claimed a wicket in each of his first three overs. With N Hussain (5-1-8-0) bowling economically, Hemstedt took full advantage of the pressure to end his spell well (his last three wickets came at the cost of no runs from 23 balls) as he earned his club cap via a maiden 5-fer, ending with figures of 6-3-10-5. The Cavaliers dismissed Mersea for just 83 runs to claim a 192 run win.
