Rain Doesn't Stop Ardleigh

The Sunday XI travelled to Ardleigh today, and elected to bat first upon winning the toss.
The Cavaliers innings didn't get off to the best start, as openers D Smith (4) and S Pillalamarri (1) dismissed early on. With N Jalib (5) and P Johnson (0) following soon after, the Cavs were 10/4 after just 4 overs. A fifth wicket partnership of 39 between P Sadler and J Walton then helped the Cavs recover before the wicket of Walton (18) brought E Parry to the crease, who proceeded to add 79 for the sixth wicket with Sadler. The return of Sadler was a welcome sight for the Cavaliers as he reached a 58 ball fifty before eventually being dismissed for a very good 70, despite the distraction of two rain delays and an early tea. With the Cavs 128/6 with 5 overs left P Trivedi (1), N Davidson (3) and D Young (4) were all out in the pursuit of quick runs. A reverse sweep from last man T Mayhew (1*) then got Parry (32*) on strike as the Cavaliers ended their innings on 149/9.
Ardleigh got off to a good start in the second innings as the openers saw off the opening spells of N Davidson and J Walton (9-1-31-0) on their way to a first wicket partnership of 86 before T Mayhew (6-0-29-1) bowled T Harvey (51). With Mayhew and D Smith (9-2-21-0) bowling well in tandem without further reward, Ardleigh edged towards their target, with K Lamont (67*) leading the way. A couple of late wickets from S Pillalamarri (5-0-31-1) and the returning Davidson (9-0-29-1) gave the Cavaliers hope, but Ardleigh reached their target, scoring 151/3, to win by 7 wickets with two overs remaining.

High Scoring Game at Witham

The Cavaliers Saturday XI played at Witham today.

Having lost the toss, the Cavaliers fielded first with opening bowlers K Hemstedt (5-1-24-0) and M Wall (4-0-30-0) finding some swing, but the Witham openers found the boundary regularly. Change bowlers Z Ahmed and N Hussain then helped to reduce the run rate before the introduction of S Pillalamarri reaped dividends as he broke the opening stand of 101. Pillalamarri continued to chip away at the Witham batting line up despite some attacking shots, as N Hussian (13-1-67-0) continued at the other end. Captain Pillalamarri went on to complete his maiden 5-fer for the Cavaliers, ending with figures of 12-0-62-5, as the returning Z Ahmed (11-2-36-1) also claimed a wicket via a very well judged catch by Hussain on the midwicket boundary. With Young and Pillalamarri combining to effect a run out on the last ball of the innings, Witham ended their 45 overs on 230/7.

The Cavs reply didn't get off to the best of starts, with P Trevedi (0) departing in the second over but a second wicket partnership of 59 between D Dellar and S Pillalamarri got the Cavaliers up to 65/1 before Dellar (34) and Pillalamarri (24) were dismissed just before the first drinks break of the innings. Regular wickets then pegged the Cavaliers back as S Annaldas (0), Z Ahmed (13) and M Rasheed (6) were all dismissed. A partnership of 22 between N Hussain and P Johnson then saw the Cavs pass 100 before the run out of Hussain (22) saw the Cavs slip to 119/7 after 26.4 overs. With the Cavs under pressure, P Johnson and K Hemstedt the unfurled some attacking strokes in an eighth wicket partnership of 73 before Hemstedt (36) was dismissed. Johnson and M Wall (8) then saw the Cavs past 200 to guarantee full batting points, but the last wicket pair of Johnson and Young (3*) were unable to see the Cavs home as Johnson (30) was dismissed with the Cavs finishing on 212 all out, losing by 18 runs with 9 balls remaining.

Eight Ash Tail Wags

The Saturday XI travelled to Eight Ash Green today, and fielded first upon winning the toss.

The Cavaliers got off to a great start, with opening bowlers A Sarwar and Z Ahmed bowling good lines and lengths to reduce EAG to 31/5 in 10.3 overs. The Green then recovered through a sixth wicket partnership of 30 before M Wall (6-0-41-1) and F Murtaza claimed wickets in successive overs to leave EAG on 63/7. With Murtaza (6-1-18-2) claiming a second wicket four overs later, the Cavs were feeling confident having reduced their opponents to 82/8... What happened next was quite incredible, as the ninth wicket pair set about attacking the bowlers, with S Pillalamarri (7-1-50-0) and the returning openers, A Sarwar (11-2-47-3) and Z Ahmed (15-2-73-2), taking some punishment. Eight Ash ended their 45 overs on 232/8 as the ninth wicket pair of O Stovell (134*) and D Purser (39*) added an unbeaten 150 runs!!

With 233 required, the Cavs needed a good start, but the early wicket of F Murtaza (2) was not an ideal way to begin. A second wicket partnership of 50 between D Dellar and N Jalib helped the Cavs recover to 62/1, but the wickets of Dellar (43), Jalib (24) and S Pillalamarri (2) saw the score slip to 82/4. An attacking fifth wicket partnership of 42 between Z Ahmed and M Rasheed (10), followed by partnership of 17 between Ahmed (who reached a 48 ball 50) and P Johnson saw the Cavs up to 141/5, but with the required run rate approaching almost 10 an over the pressure told as Ahmed (51) and Johnson (3) were dismissed. With A Sarwar (5) out soon after, it was left to M Wall (5) and D Young (0*) to see the Cavs pass 150 (and a third batting point) before C Finch (0*) survived the last four balls to deny EAG maximum points. Finch also denied EAG bowler W Spicer (7-0-38-4) a five wicket haul as the Cavs finished their 45 overs on 157/9, losing by 75 runs.

Cavs Claim Second Sunday Win

The Sunday XI played 9-man Clacton today at Mill Road.

With the Cavaliers batting first by agreement, openers S Pillalamarri and P Trevedi added 36 for the first wicket before Pillalamarri (20) was bowled by a good delivery. With Trevedi (14) following soon afterwards, the Cavs then set about adding small partnerships as B Mager (8), D Smith (18) and J Walton (6) all contributing as the Cavs reached 102/5, with J Lee (9-1-45-5) claiming all the wickets to fall. With Z Ahmed batting well, the other batsmen continued to get starts without going on, as P Johnson (6) and T Goodall (8) both fell to A Young (9-0-29-2). An enterprising eighth wicket partnership of 36 between Ahmed and J Rawlings (13) got the Cavs to 166/7 before Rawlings was dismissed. With P Kalra (0) stumped first ball, it was left to Ahmed (48*) and D Young (6) to get the Cavaliers up to their final total of 181 all out in 37.4 overs, with extras contributing 34 to the total.

The Cavs defence of their total got off to a good start as J Rawlings claimed an early wicket to leave Clacton 1/1 from 3 overs. A second wicket partnership of 37 helped Clacton recover, but Rawlings (7-2-38-2) dismissed the dangerous D Smith (32 from 28 balls), with D Young claiming his second catch of the day. With the other opening bowler P Kalra (9-4-21-0) keeping things tight, captain D Smith took advantage of the pressure to take two wickets in two balls (and beating the edge with the hat-trick ball) on his way to figures of 5-1-20-2, including a catch by Z Ahmed. It was then man of the moment, Ahmed, who took the next two wickets while bowling beautifully, ending with figures of 7-4-10-2. With just two wickets required for the win, J Walton (5-0-22-2) took them both in his last over, with Young claiming the winning catch as Clacton were all out for 112 in 33 overs as the Cavaliers won by 69 runs.

Disappointing End to the (Midweek) Season

The Property Book Cavaliers played Ardleigh in the CECL semi final tonight.
The Cavaliers got off to a good start, taking a wicket with the second ball of the innings through the bowling of J Rawlings. With N Davidson (2-0-26-1) taking a wicket in the next over the Cavs were making good progress, especially when Rawlings (4-0-24-2) claimed another wicket shortly afterwards. The Cavs then turned to J Walton (3-0-19-0) who bowled well while N Hussain (4-0-26-2) attacked, taking two wickets via stumpings by D Young. With J Lawson (2-0-8-1) keeping things tight at the end, Ardleigh were restricted to 109/6 from their 15 overs.

The Cavs added 14 for the first wicket before opener J Corcos (0) was bowled, but his dismissal brought captain D Dellar to the crease. Continuing his form from Saturday, Dellar added 47 for the second wicket with N Jalib (27) before the latter was stumped to leave the Cavaliers on 61/2 at the halfway point. with N Davidson (4) and Dellar (38) dismissed in quick succession (Dellar out via an juggling catch), the Cavs then started losing wickets regularly as M Rackowe (run out for 8), J Walton (11) and J Rawlings (very well caught for 0) were all out to see the score go from 89/4 to 92/7. The combination of N Hussain and J Lawson then saw the Cavs pass 100, reaching 102/7 with three balls of the innings remaining. The dismissal of Lawson (7) then saw T Goodall (0) out first ball as he aimed for a much needed boundary, followed by D Young (0) out first ball while trying to hit a last-ball six to tie the scores. With M Hobb (4-0-17-4) ending the innings with a hat-trick, N Hussain was stranded on 3* as the Cavaliers posted 102 all out from their 15 overs (including two 7-ball overs for the second time this year!), losing by 6 runs.

Low Total Costs Cavs (Again)

The Sunday XI played Gosfield at Mill Road today, and batted first upon losing the toss.

The Cavaliers innings got off to a slow start, with openers P Fenton (1) and E Parry (5) dismissed early on. With P Johnson (0) departing shortly after a mix-up resulted in P Trevedi (0) being run out, the Cavs were struggling on 21/4 after just 10 overs. Cavs #3 D Smith then combined with J Bardell in a fifth wicket partnership of 17 before Bardell (4) was the victim of another mix-up and was run out. Smith and D Young then added 20 for the sixth wicket to see the Cavs past 50, but an acrobatic catch by the Gosfield keeper accounted for Young (3). With N Davidson (4) and T Mayhew (1) dismissed in quick succession, Smith went on the attack while C Finch (1) held up an end, as the pair added 19 for the last wicket before Smith (59) was the last man out. The Cavaliers ended their innings all out for 87 in 31.4 overs.

Despite some good bowling from the Cavaliers opening pair of J Bardell (4-0-12-0) and N Davidson, the Gosfield reply got off to a good start as they added 39 for the first wicket before Davidson (6-1-31-1) claimed the first wicket via a well directed short ball, caught by Young. It was then P Fenton's turn to get amongst the wickets, taking three in successive overs - First by a juggling Young (aided by T Mayhew), then a caught & bowled, and finally a bowled, as he recorded figures of 5-1-21-3 in his first Cavaliers appearance. With Gosfield 71/4, P Trevedi (2-1-9-0) was introduced to the attack, and was unlucky to not take a wicket in his first over (three LBW shouts & beating the edge too!). As Gosfield neared their total, the captain turned to Mayhew (0.3-0-2-0), but it was too late - Gosfield reached their target of 88 to win by six wickets after just 17.3 overs, with keeper J Doherty (43*) top-scoring.

Opening Stand Puts Bergholt on the Back Foot

The Cavaliers Saturday XI travelled to West Bergholt today.

With Bergholt winning the toss, the Cavs were asked to bat first. The opening partnership of D Dellar and S Pillalamarri then made the Bergholt captain regret his decision as they set about adding the best opening stand of 2015 for the Cavs, putting on 95 for the first wicket (in 23.2 overs) before Pillalamarri was caught for 41. Dellar was then joined by N Jalib (21) in a fluent second wicket partnership of 50, followed by a third wicket partnership of 19 with Z Ahmed before Dellar was eventually dismissed for a fine 75. With only eight overs remaining, the Cavs went on the attack with A Sarwar (2), JJ Elliston (1), N Davidson (0) and K Hemstedt (0) all out in the search for quick runs. Despite wickets falling at the other end, Ahmed (28*) batted well to see the Cavaliers up to 199/7 from their 45 overs, with P Kalra (4*) the other not out batsman.

The Cavs defence of their total got off to a good start, with N Davidson (6-0-22-1) taking a wicket in the second over of the innings via a sharp catch at gully by Pillalamarri. The next over (third of the innings) then saw Sarwar dismiss the dangerous D Wheeler (2) before claiming the third wicket of the innings (Ahmed the catcher) on his way to figures of 8-2-22-2. Bergholt then staged a mini-recovery through a fourth wicket partnership of 22 before Kalra had ex-Cavalier L Wisbey (10) caught by D Young via a top edged pull. With wickets falling either side of the drinks break, as Ahmed claimed his first wicket via a good slip catch by Dellar and Jalib running out Rogers (31) with a direct hit from third man, the Cavs had dismissed the Bergholt top six and were looking to wrap things up. With Kalra (6-2-21-2) and Ahmed (5-1-18-2) both claiming their second wickets of the innings, it was left to the golden arm of K Hemstedt (1-0-3-2) to finish things as the Cavaliers had West Bergholt all out for 98 in 26 overs, to claim a 101 run win.
