University Taught a Lesson

The Property Book Cavaliers faced the University away in the Evening League tonight in a 12 over contest.

Fielding first, the Cavaliers removed both University openers early on, with K Jayasinghe (2-0-21-1) and J Walton (2-0-16-1) both striking in their first overs of the match. Those early wickets brought the familiar face of F Murtaza (appearing as a guest player for the Uni) to the crease, and he dominated a third wicket partnership of 56 with some lusty (and lucky!) blows against the Cavs opening bowlers and first-change K Hemstedt (3-0-28-0). The introduction of J Lawson swung things back to the Cavaliers as he collected three quick wickets on his way to figures of 2-0-23-3, including that of the dangerous Murtaza. With N Hussain (3-0-18-2) taking two wickets in the final over of the innings, the University ended on 107/7 from their 12 overs.

The Cavaliers chase got off to a brilliant start, taking 16 from the first over, with N Jalib hitting the first three (legal) balls of the innings for boundaries. With the opening stand worth 27 in under two overs the Cavs were going well, but the quick wickets of J Corcos (1) and T Goodall (2) left the Cavs 30/2. An attacking third wicket partnership of 39 between Jalib and J Walton (23 from 19 balls) got the Cavaliers ahead of the run-rate, with captain D Dellar (13 from 13 balls) then combining with Jalib in a fourth wicket stand of 31 to see the Cavs up to 100/4 - By this point Jalib had already reached his 50 from just 33 balls! It was then left to N Hussain (6*) to hit the winning runs as the PBUK Cavaliers reached their target of 108 in 10.5 overs to win by six wickets, with N Jalib unbeaten at the other end with 53* (from 35 balls).
