Low Totals Cost Cavs

Two low scoring matches for the Cavaliers this weekend...

The Saturday XI played West Bergholt at the rugby club and batted first, having lost the toss. With D Dellar (5) and F Murtaza (4) falling cheaply, M Vinter and N Jalib combined for a promising partnership of 30 for the third wicket before Jalib (10) was bowled. Two quick wickets, those of Vinter (run out for 17) and Pillalamarri (0), saw the Cavs struggling at 51/5, but Z Ahmed and P Johnson (6) helped the Cavs recover to 78/5. Regular wickets then hurt the Cavs, with K Hemstedt (2), K Jayasinghe (0), and Z Ahmed (41) all falling in quick succession. A tenth wicket partnership of 17 between N Hussain (10*) and A Sarwar (5) got the Cavaliers up to their final total of 119 all out.

The Cavs responded well, with A Sarwar (5-2-14-1) and N Hussain claiming early wickets. Partnerships of 31 and 49 for the third and fourth wickets saw West Bergholt up to 96/4, with Z Ahmed (5-1-24-1) and S Pillalamarri (5-0-33-1) the bowlers breaking those stands. Hussain (15-4-38-2) managed one more wicket (in the penultimate over of the innings), but it was too little too late as Bergholt reached their target in 30.4 overs, finishing on 121/5 to win by five wickets.

In the other game of the weekend, the Sunday XI travelled to Gosfield. Another lost toss meant the Cavs bowled first on a pitch offering variable bounce. An early wicket for Bardell (caught by a diving N Davidson) gave the Cavs a good start before fellow opening bowler, J Walton (9-1-29-1) also took a wicket. With D Howell (9-1-22-1) taking a wicket soon afterwards, the Cavs had Gosfield struggling on 56/3 from 18ovs. The Cavaliers continued to keep things tight, with D Smith (8-3-27-0) helping Howell restrict Gosfield to 83/3 from 31 overs. The Gosfield batsmen then went on the attack in the last 9 overs on their way to a fourth wicket partnership of 106, with Pillalamarri (3-0-17-0) and Davidson (2-0-18-0) taking some punishment. A late breakthrough from Bardell (9-1-56-2) helped raise spirits, but Gosfield ended their 40ovs on 173/4.

The Cavs reply started poorly, with J Walton (4) and E Parry (0) dismissed early on. D Smith (18 from 18 balls) helped the Cavs up to 30 before Pillalamarri (23) and P Johnson (10) added 40 for the fourth wicket. With both batsmen dismissed within 3 balls, the Cavs slipped from 70/3 to 70/5 before M Rackowe (1) and Bardell (20) helped the Cavaliers up to 90/5 before a series of quick wickets saw both batsmen dismissed, followed by Davidson (0), Mayhew (0) and D Young (2) as the Cavaliers were all out for 97 after 36 overs, with D Howell left undefeated on 2*, leaving Gosfield as winners by 76 runs.
