Cavaliers (ancient) History

From the archives a newpaper report published in the local paper on 1st September 1976 featuring the scores between Woods and NALGO, which was the club that renamed itself to create Colchester Cavaliers CC. NALGO was the National Association of Local Government Officers; the trade union for local government employees.

The game features Peter Rawlings who opened the batting and the bowling, taking 6-52 but just failing to do enough to defend a total of 106.

The Cavaliers batting line up was Rawlings, Firth, Smith, Whitfield, Hollingsworth, Roberts, Tydeman, Gooday, Purslow, Graham, Whitfield.

The clipping was saved by Barry (Badger) Ball who plays at Abberton and Colchester & East Essex - he featured in the game, which was his first ever game of cricket after a distinguished career in football. He played professionally for Colchester United and was briefly on the books at Ipswich Town. Remarkably he top scored in the Woods innings with 31*, took a wicket and a brace of catches.

Although Badger wrote 1974 on the clipping some research based on the report on the reverse page revealed that the game was played over the August Bank Holiday weekend (28-30th) in 1976. A report of Ipswich's League Cup second round draw with Brighton was on the rear which was played on 31st August 1976.
