Honour in Defeat

Cavaliers were the first team this year to dismiss West Mersea for less than two hundred but our batting wasn't strong enough to chase the 172 needed on a tricky wicket.

As often seems to happen in our games against the Islanders we were successful in seeing off the openers cheaply with Stuart bowling Adam Rutter with a peach of a leg-cutter and Darren tempting Mills into a lofted drive caught by Dave. For a while it seemed that the regular fight back was coming with Bruce and then Conway hitting some huge shots often off reasonable deliveries but in both cases we were able to take our chances and get them for less than 50. Dan Smith was the pick of the bowlers with 4 wickets but Dave and Tony also bowled well under pressure from the big hitters. With the innings closing in the 34th over Cavaliers had a maximum of 56 overs to score 172 to win.

Things got off to a poor start with Simon trapped LBW on the front foot and Justin unlucky to drag on a half-volley. Darren (42) and Stuart started the rebuild but it wasn't until Dave Howell joined Darren at eight wickets down that a decent partnership was constructed. Both batting with control, making a mockery of the earlier carnage. Unfortunately we were not able to get to a bonus point but can take some pride from our bowling and fielding effort.
