End of Season Fare

Cavaliers won the toss and elected to bat first having drafted Alex W in at the last minute and still waiting for Amir to arrive from London. Little did we know that Gosfield were waiting the arrival of 4 players and would have to field for 10 overs with just 5 out fielders.

Despite the enormous gaps in the field the scoring was sedate with Simon out in the first over thanks to a monster hangover leading to a rebuilding phase by Vinnie and Luke. Both fell just as things were getting back on track and just as the missing players all showed up. Surprisingly Jack and Darren found the going easier with normality restored and built a match winning partnership including some classy shots down the ground combined with pulling anything short. Jack was unlucky to fall LBW just short of 50 and Darren just got the other side of the milestone before was caught. A major collapse followed but we already had a competitive total ending on 180 all out.

Deji and Stuart opened the bowling against two openers obviously in a hurry to get back to London quickly. Runs came at an alarming rate and suddenly it looked like we had under estimated a par score. Key wickets from Amir and Tony turned the game back in our favour before Darren inflicted further damage on the middle order. Now Cavaliers started to ratchet up the pressure and the required rate climbed past 6 and then 8 per over. Eventually the pressure was too much and a series of run outs, four in total and three in a single over, settled matters in our favour.

There was a general sense of satisfaction at having won with a half mix of First and Second XI regulars and to avoid ending the season with a string of defeats.
