Bitter Taste of Defeat

Although Cavaliers First XI are almost certain to gain promotion as league champions there was a determination to continue our winning streak with revenge for defeats by Colchester last season. However it was not to be as history repeated itself and we lost, narrowly in the end, in a low scoring match at Castle Park.

A very slow, tired but abrasive pitch contributed to the low scoring. Other than Sam Foster who took advantage of the new ball none of the batsmen could drive the ball off the square and so bowlers settled for bowling line and length with a ring of fielders. Only Stuart and Dan Smith batting down the order were able to adapt to conditions with a tip and run game, mixed with some big hits against the spinners.

All the Cavaliers bowlers took away good figures with Stuart taking the first two thanks to a pair of catches at leg-slip by Simon, Dan Skinner pinning down the middle order and taking the vital wicket of Sam Foster, Ray his usual consistent self and Dan Smith cleaning up in the tail.

Justin battled hard for his 23 runs but once Simon was out wickets fell all too regularly until Stuart and Dan Smith gave us a sniff of victory. With Colchester sensing a lost opportunity Henry Foster was brought back and bowled Dan first ball but then sprayed it around all over to give Stuart some easy runs. After Phil ran himself out Stuart had to chance his arm and went down swinging.
