Riaz Leads Rout

The Saturday XI travelled to Elveden today for the last Two Counties match of 2017.

After losing the toss the Cavaliers batted first, adding 22 for the first wicket before both openers, D Dellar (8) and M Vinter (4), were bowled - The Cavs slipping to 22/2. A difficult pitch was then made to look much easier by the third wicket partnership of D Smith and P Kannan, who added 76 runs in 13 overs together before Kannan (47) and Smith (31) fell in successive overs. With K Chowdhury (6) and P Johnson (6) falling in successive overs shortly afterwards, the Cavaliers were 122/6 after 27 overs. A seventh wicket partnership of 66 between N Hussain and P Kalra then saw the Cavaliers up to 188, but some confused running saw Hussain run out for 31 (though he would later claim it was tirednes halfway through a run). Kalra then joined with N Davidson to get the Cavaliers up to 200 before Kalra (28) was out to make the score 200/8 from 43.2 overs. Some quick singles from Davidson and Young (5*) saw the Cavs up to their final total of 208/9 from 45 overs, with Davidson (12) stumped off the last ball of the innings.

The Cavaliers defence of their total got off to a fantastic start, with N Davidson dismissing an Elveden opener via a screaming one-handed catch at gully by P Johnson, and then bowling the opposition's #3 with a ball that nipped back to hit the top of off - A double-wicket maiden first up. With fellow opener S Riaz starting with a maiden himself (and another from Davidson), Elveden were 0/2 from 3 overs! As Davidson (8-4-26-2) bowled a good spell at one end, S Riaz started to chip away at the Elveden batting line up; catches by D Dellar and D Young, plus a bowled wicket saw Elveden slip to 45/5 after 16 overs. With N Hussain (5-3-6-0) unlucky to go wicketless, Riaz continued to strike at the other end, claiming two more wickets on his way to figures of 12-5-30-5; a maiden 5-fer and a Cavaliers cap! Captain Dellar then turned to P Kalra (3-0-9-0) and D Smith - Smith mopping up the tail and claiming the last wicket of the innings, that of Elveden opener A Flack (41), on his way to figures of 2.2-0-2-3 as Elveden were all out for 80 in 30.2 overs as the Cavaliers won by 128 runs.

Promotion to Division 7 now rests on other results, but today's win was a fine way to cap off a good 2017 Two Counties campaign - Well played to all of the Saturday XI players!
