Will (Wilton-)Steers Kelvedon to Victory

The Sunday XI welcomed Kelvedon & Feering to Mill Road for their last home game of the 2017 NECL season.

Having lost the toss the Cavs were invited to field first and the Kelvedon openers added 81 together with R Rasheed (5-1-42-0) and N Davidson (first spell of 7-0-47-0) unable to take an early wicket. B Prabhu (9-1-52-1) then made the first breakthrough but the Kelvedon second wicket pairing continued to attack the Cavaliers bowling attack, reaching 141/1 after just 16 overs, with an imposing score of 350+ looking possible! With Prabhu and M Nadeem (9-0-56-0) helping to reduce the run rate, Kelvedon reached 211/1 in 27.5 overs before S Riaz struck in his fourth over, taking 4-8 in 14 balls, ending with figures of 9-0-54-4 (and having a close LBW shout turned down in his last over for a maiden 5-fer). With Nadeem also effecting a direct-hit run out, Kelvedon 249/6 after 38 overs. A good last over burst from N Davidson (8-0-57-2) saw two more wickets fall, and Kelvedon ended their 40 overs on 267/8 - Quite a recovery from the Cavaliers bowlers and fielders!

The Cavaliers reply saw R Akhlaq and debutant I Nasir add 23 for the first wicket before Akhlaq (13) was caught out. A second wicket partnership of 41 got the Cavs up to 64, but a wobble saw R Rasheed (16), M Nadeem (0) and N Jalib (9) all dimised cheaply as the score slipped to 74/4. With I Nasir (33) out soon afterwards the Cavaliers were in danger of not passing 100, but the next wicket didn't fall until the score had reached 96 - A Rasheed (7) the man to go. Some lusty blows from B Prabhu kept the scoreboard ticking along as the score reached 112/6, but wickets fell quickly from that point onwards, with S Riaz (0), N Davidson (4), Prabhu (30) and C Finch (0) all dismissed as the Cavaliers were 118 all out in 22 overs (D Young the unbeaten batsman on 1*), losing by 149 runs - W Wilton-Steer causing most of the damage with 5-24 from 5 overs.
