Cavs Fall Short of Frinton

The Saturday XI hosted Frinton III today at Mill Road.

With the visitors winning the toss, the Cavaliers were asked to field first in overcast and damp conditions. The Cavs started well, with the innings opening with four maidens - R Rasheed (6-2-11-0) making his comeback to the team, and P Kalra taking the only wicket to fall in the first 15 overs as Frinton reached 37/1. The introduction of the Cavs spinners saw N Hussain remove the other opener (bowled around his legs by a turning ball), but the big-hitting Frinton #4 took advantage of an early drop to blast a quick 22 before Hussain had him caught by Murtaza. A 52 run fourth wicket partnership saw Frinton pass 100 before K Chowdhury (3-0-43-2) took a brace of wickets, including a fine one-handed grab by D Dellar. With Chowdhury claiming a one-handed catch of his own off the bowling of Hussain (15-3-58-3), Frinton were 131/6. Despite the best efforts of the bowlers, Frinton took runs off of Sarwar (3-0-17-0) plus the returning Kalra (9-2-28-2) and U Ghani, but a double-wicket maiden by Ghani (9-3-35-2) in the final over gave the Cavs something to cheer about - Frinton ended their 45 overs on 201/9.

The Cavaliers reply saw M Vinter (7) out cheaply, but an 82 run partnership between D Dellar and F Murtaza (who was dropped five times, and passed 50 from 62 balls during the partnership) saw the Cavaliers up to 105 before Dellar was dismissed for a hard-worked 35. A further 40 runs were added to the total before Murtaza was out for a fine 83 (from 82 balls - including five sixes!). The Cavaliers innings then stalled as wickets fell regularly - A Sarwar (0), K Chowdhury (8), R Rasheed (2), N Hussain (5) and U Ghani (0) all dismissed in a six over period as the Cavs slipped from 145/2 to 165/8. With victory looking unlikely, the Cavaliers made sure of a fourth batting point through P Kalra (12*) and D Young (8*) as they reached 181/8 in their 45 overs, losing by 20 runs.
