Team Effort Overcomes West Mersea

The Sunday XI played West Mersea at Mill Road yesterday.

After losing the toss, the Cavaliers were asked to field as Mersea added 43 runs for the first wicket against opening bowlers R Rasheed (5-0-17-0) and M Nadeem. The breakthrough eventually came via an LBW for Nadeem, which was followed by a wicket for P Singh and a second for Nadeem (8-2-16-2), who removed the dangerous L Conway for 8 (caught by Rasheed). Mersea then set about recovering via a fourth wicket partnership, reaching 73/3, but a sequence of four wicket-maidens from P Singh (8-3-19-3) and T Mayhew (8-2-23-2, with both wickets coming via stumpings by N Jalib) saw the opposition slip to 73/7. With T Hijazi (4-1-9-1) claiming the eighth wicket to fall, it was left to C Finch (1-0-8-2) to take the final two wickets (both bowled) as West Mersea were all out for 107 in 34 overs.

The Cavaliers reply got off to a slow start as the Mersea opening bowlers kept things tight, leading to opener M Vinter (0) and P Singh (4) both falling to the bowling of Conway (8-3-18-2). Soon after the wickets fell, the runs started to come more easily for the Cavs as skipper N Jalib (51*) set a fine example to his team in an unbeaten third wicket partnership of 97 with the quick-scoring M Nadeem (47*) as the Cavaliers scored 111/2 in 26.2 overs as they won by 8 wickets.
