Cavs Claim Another Victory

The Sunday XI hosted Kirby today, looking for back-to-back wins in the NECL and the 'double' over Kirby.

Having lost the toss, the Cavaliers found themselves batting. Kirby's bowlers got off to a good start with D Smith (3) out early as the Cavs scored just eight runs from the first six overs. The wickets of M Vinter (16) and E Parry (6) saw the score slip to 39/3, but a fourth wicket partnership of 42 between N Jalib (23) and T Hijazi (28) helped the Cavs recover before both batsmen fell in quick succession to leave the score on 82/5 with a collapse looking possible. A counterattacking sixth wicket partnership of 57 (with nine boundaries) between J Rishworth (32) and D Young made the scoreboard look healthier before N Davidson (5*) and Young added a further 20 for the seventh wicket to see the score up to 159/6 with one over remaining. With big shots required, Young was dismissed for a career-best 30, followed by J Samwell (0), before C Finch (1*) took a single off the last ball to see the Cavaliers up to their final score of 161/8 in 40 overs.

The Cavaliers opened the bowling with J Rishworth and N Davidson, with both bowlers bowling economically (Davidson going for 10 off his first over before returning an opening spell of 6-3-17-0) before Rishworth (6-0-16-1) dismissed the dangerous K Parkes (14). A second wicket partnership of 50 but Kirby in the strong position of 82/1 after 22 overs, but an excellent running catch by T Hijazi off the bowling of J Samwell (9-1-36-1) gave Samwell his first Cavaliers wicket. Kirby passed 100 in the 29th over, but wickets for T Mayhew (9-1-34-1) and D Smith (5-0-11-1) in successive overs saw two wickets fall with the score on 104. The introduction of C Finch (3-0-15-2) brought two wickets in four balls (both falling with the score on 111) to put the Cavs in a commanding position before Davidson (8-3-25-1) returned to take a wicket off the last ball of the innings as Kirby finished their 40 overs on 138/7 - The Cavaliers claiming a 23 run win.
