Coggeshall Strike Again

The Saturday XI played Coggeshall 3rds at Mill Road today, hoping to avenge the loss in the earlier away fixture.

The day started well with the captain calling correctly (electing to field), and opening bowlers N Davidson (6-0-31-1) and P Kalra (6-2-15-1) both claiming early wickets. A third wicket partnership of 46 got Coggeshall up to 59/2 before P Winslow (6-2-18-1) claimed his first Cavaliers wicket. With N Hussain introduced to the attack, he started with a maiden followed by two wicket maidens to reduce the opposition to 59/5. Hussain then ended a sixth wicket partnership of 14 thanks to a smart catch by D Dellar at slip, before Hussain produced a moment of fielding brilliance at cover to claim a diving catch to earn K Hemstedt (4-1-11-1) a wicket. A fourth wicket for Hussain then followed to leave Coggeshall 95/8 but some late order hitting, with C Finch (2-0-19-0) receiving the most punishment, got Coggeshall up to their final total of 122 all out from 35.5 overs, with Hussain (11.5-6-24-6) taking the last two wickets to fall.

The Cavs reply started well enough as D Dellar and D Young added 20 for the first wicket in 6 overs, but the loss of Dellar (11) triggered a collapse of Cavaliers proportions, as D Young (5), P Trevedi (0), K Hemstedt (0), N Hussain (0), N Davidson (4), P Johnson (0) and S Pillalamarri (0) were all dismissed in quick succession. From 20/0, the Cavaliers collapsed to 33/8, with a triple-wicket maiden from the young S Docherty (7-2-13-4) inflicting the most damage. It was then left to the bowlers to show the top order how to bat as P Kalra played some fine shots in a ninth wicket partnership of 46 with P Winslow (10) before the latter was bowled. With C Finch (1) out soon after the Cavaliers were all out for 87 in 25.4 overs, losing by 35 runs. The Cavs were indebted to Kalra (26*) and extras (30) for the bulk of their runs.
