Cavs do the Double Over Copford

The Cavaliers Saturday XI played top of the league Copford at Mill Road today.

Having won the toss, the Cavaliers elected to bowl first on a drying wicket. The Copford openers started well, weathering spells from opening bowlers N Davidson (7-0-20-0) and P Kalra (4-2-11-0) while adding 34 for the first wicket before the introduction of N Hussain brought about the first wicket. A second wicket partnership of 11 got Copford up to 45/1, but an ill-judged single resulted in a run-out by F Murtaza, followed by the combination of Hussain (claiming four more wickets for his third 5-fer of the season) and K Hemstedt (6-0-24-2) reducing the visitors to 64/8, with excellent catches held by Davidson, P Johnson and Kalra (2). The Copford tail then began to wag in the face of spinners Hussain and S Pillalamarri (5-1-19-0) as the last two wickets added 42 runs, but Hussain claimed the last two wickets as he registered his best figures for the club for the second week running, finishing with 14.1-6-26-7 (the last one a one-handed grab by D Young - his third catch of the day). The Copford innings ended after 35.1 overs, finishing on 106 all out.

The Cavaliers started their reply well with an opening stand of 45 (in 6 overs) before the wickets of E Parry (13) and N Jalib (0) from successive balls gave Copford some hope, but a rapid fifty (in just 34 balls) from F Murtaza on his way to 63* (42 balls) in combination with a captain's knock from S Pillalamarri (12*) saw the Cavaliers (108/2) win by 8 wickets after 13.1 overs - The third wicket partnership adding an unbeaten 63.
