Sunday Side Slumps

The Sunday XI played Chappel & Wakes Colne at the rugby club today.

Having won the toss, the Cavaliers batted first and lost opener A Kundi (0) early on. Fellow opener N Jalib (7) followed soon afterwards, having added 12 for the second wicket with skipper D Smith (9) who was next to depart. A fourth wicket partnership of 12 between N Hussain and K Jayasinghe got the Cavs up to 36 before Hussain (10) was out, giving Chappel's opening bowler S King figures of 9-3-25-4, having dismissed the Cavaliers top four. A familiar collapse then saw the Cavaliers go from 41/4 to eight-down for less than fifty as Jayasinghe (8), B Goldsmith (3), J Corcos (0) and J Walton (0) all dismissed in quick succession. A lengthy ninth wicket partnership between D Young (8*) and T Mayhew (12) got the Cavaliers past fifty before Mayhew and last man C Finch (2) were out.

The second innings started well for the Cavaliers, with N Hussain (9-5-11-0) keeping the pressure on the Chappel batsmen, and K Jayasinghe (3-0-14-1) claiming an early wicket (thanks to some clever field placement by the skipper) to leave the opposition 12/1. Sadly the Cavs were unable to take any further wickets, with spells from J Walton (3-1-6-0), D Smith (3-0-17-0), C Finch (1-0-14-0) and T Mayhew (0.3-0-8-0) passing without success as Chappel built an unbeaten second wicket partnership of 60, with D Maytham (13*) and Z Taylor (47*) sealing a nine wicket win, reaching 72/1 from 19.3 overs.
