PBUK Lose a Close One

The Property Book Cavaliers faced the University in the Colchester Evening League tonight.

Upon losing the toss the Cavaliers fielded first, with N Davidson (3-0-23-1) and debutant R Miller (2-0-32-0) struggling against the aggressive Uni openers before Davidson claimed the first wicket. The change bowlers then went about reducing the run rate, with J Rawlings returning impressive figures of 3-0-8-3, while K Jayasinghe (2-0-7-1), J Lawson (2-0-11-2) and C Haines (2-0-17-1) all bowled well. It was then left to JJ Elliston (1-0-8-0) to bowl the final over (which included a direct hit run out by D Young) as the PBUK Cavs restricted the University to 110/9 from their 15 overs.

The Cavaliers reply got off to a good start as openers S Pillalamarri (13) and G Moncrieff (11) added 29 for the first wicket before getting out in quick succession. M Rackowe and Elliston (6) kept the Cavs going, but a series of quick wickets saw the Cavs slip from 57/3 to 69/7 as Miller (4), Davidson (0), Rackowe (12) and Jayasinghe (0) were all dismissed. A good 36 run partnership for the eighth wicket between J Rawlings and C Haines (12) got the Cavaliers up to 105 before Haines was out via a fine catch by the bowler. With six needed from the last ball to win, J Lawson could only manage two from the only ball he faced as the Cavaliers finished on 107/8 to lose by 3 runs, with J Rawlings left on 31 not out from just 23 balls. In hindsight, two seven-ball overs (the fourth & tenth) may have proved costly as the Cavs narrowly lost.
