Ex-Cavs Box(ted) Clever

The Cavaliers Saturday XI faced Boxted today at a drizzly Mill Road.

Having lost the toss, the Cavaliers were asked to bat. Openers F Murtaza and D Dellar made steady progress against the new ball before Dellar (6) edged a delivery from T Berry behind to D Skinner to leave the Cavs 15/1. A good partnership of 30 between Murtaza and M Vinter for the second wicket saw the Cavs up to 45/1, but the pressure of three successive maidens brought the wickets of Murtaza (23) and N Jalib (0). Z Ahmed (14) then joined Vinter in a fourth wicket partnership of 25, but his wicket was the first in a Cavaliers-esque collapse as Vinter (21), K Jayasinghe (2), and P Johnson (3) all followed soon after - From 70/3, the Cavs slumped to 78/7, with ex-Cavs T Berry (15-6-24-3), R Mitchell (15-2-41-1), B Moore (7-1-17-2) and D Skinner (3ct) inflicting the majority of the damage. With the eighth and ninth wickets adding 14 and 15 through the efforts of J Walton (10), P Kalra (5*) and A Sarwar (9), the Cavaliers scored 107/9 from their 45 overs.

The Cavaliers started their defence well, with opening bowlers A Sarwar (6-1-15-1) and P Kalra (8-3-13-1) swinging the ball well to dismiss both Boxted openers to leave the opposition 23/2. The ex-Cavs D Skinner and B Moore (21) then helped Boxted up to 94/2, adding 71 for the third wicket as chances weren't taken or didn't go to hand, with Z Ahmed (8-1-28-0), F Murtaza (5-0-22-0) and K Jayasinghe (2-0-7-0) unlucky to not take wickets. Eventually, a mix-up between the batsmen saw them both at the non-strikers end as Sarwar threw the ball to Murtaza, who threw to D Young to effect the simplest of run-outs. With just 14 more needed, Boxted reached their target after 30.3 overs as J Walton (1.3-0-14-0) was given the task of bowling at the end. Boxted ended on 111/3, with Skinner ending on 53*.
