Dropped Chances Don't Cost the Cavs

The Saturday XI hosted Witham's (very youthful) 3rd XI in the Two Counties Championship today.

Having won the toss, captain S Pillalamarri opted to field first. The Cavaliers started well, with the first runs for Witham coming in the sixth over. After a couple of early chances were dropped, F Murtaza took matters into his own hands, bowling Witham's opener for a duck. Murtaza (5-3-2-2) then took his second wicket via a fine catch at gully by P Johnson before Z Ahmed (7-3-16-2) took two wickets. With the opposition struggling the Cavaliers turned to their spinners to maintain the pressure, with Pillalamarri (3-2-3-2) and N Hussain bowling very well in tandem. A suicidal run out (effected by Ahmed & D Young) left Witham floundering on 23/8, but their highest partnership of the innings (17 for the ninth wicket - helped by a few more dropped catches) saw them up to 40/8 before Hussain (6-1-8-2) saw the number 10 caught at slip by D Dellar, followed by debutant P Kalra (4.4-2-8-1) clean bowling D Spence (Witham's young #6) for 20. Despite several missed chances, the Cavaliers had bowled Witham out for 40 runs in 25.4 overs, taking six catches (eventually). Seven Witham batsmen scored 0 too...

The Cavaliers reply saw opener J Corcos out for a second ball duck, caught at point via a well-judged running catch. Fellow opener, P Johnson, and Kalra then set about building a partnership of 18 for the second wicket before Kalra (3) was caught and bowled. M Vinter then came in at #4 and immediately went on the attack, hitting his first ball for four on his way to 17* from 12 balls (with four boundaries) as he and Johnson (17*) added 25* for the third wicket to see the Cavaliers (43/2) to victory.
