Cavaliers Revenge

Cavaliers downed their second big club of the season with a comprehensive 95 run victory over Maldon at Mill Road on Sunday.

With bad weather threatening the game was reduced to 35 overs before the start, just as we did over at Maldon a few weeks back; again the home side got first use of the strip. Ed (38) and Raj (17) got us off to another solid start before opening up with a flurry of drives, Raj "over the top" and Ed "all along the ground". Dan Smith (16) continued where Raj left off being aggresive from the start of his innings and once Simon (62) found his range against some variable spin bowling the runs came quickly. Extras once again were Cavaliers' friend with a contribution of 26 runs in a total of 178-6.

The Maldon reply start ominously from the Cavalier's perspective as the openers patiently waited for the lose delivery before springing into action although Stuart (6-0-17-0) bowled with control and Darren (5-0-30-1) was unlucky. However it was the switch to spin that turned the tide with Noman (7.3-3-15-3) and Dave (8-2-21-6) showing the Maldon spinners how to bowl on a turning wicket. After taking the big wickets the main concern was whether it would rain before the end and sure enough a heavy shower precipitated a flight from the pitch by the Maldon batsmen and a more reluctant retreat from the Cavaliers. Credit to the umpires as they got us back into action as quick as possible and the rain had quickened up the wicket sufficiently for Dave to claim his last two wickets with slip catches.

A fine all-round performance by the Cavaliers against a strong Maldon side, all catching chances were held and every player contributed to the win.

MVP: Dave Howell
